    Total failure/loss on hard drive.

    Just thought I would share this interesting picture. In the shop this morning, preparing to swap a head stack on a laptop drive. Pulled the cover to have a peek .... nothing but glass. See through platters. I suppose I could pour the metallic dust out and piece together the data??

    First time I have encountered this.

    yep because the data is stored into that magnetic coating so the data is gone now

          It's certainly possible. If anyone remembers the 60GXP and 75GXP IBM Deathstars, those drives had "issues" wherein the antiferromagnetically coupled media would sprinkle off the glass platters and stick to the read/write head assembly, leading to catastrophic failure. It seems to be a common issue with drives using glass platters...
