![]() Hello people.
I've purchased this mid 2017 13" MacBook Pro touchbar, logic board number 820-00923 who don't recognize internal SSD anymore. When powered on it display the question mark. Seller says that it simply stop working one day, no liquid spill, failed update or so. It can operate perfectly installing MacOs on external drive, but internal SSD storage does not show up in online recovery nor when external hard drive is plugged it to launch MacOs. I decided to open it and try to resolve the problem. Never been opened or worked before for sure. Inspecting the board under the microscope show this two little spot of corrosion: probe point TP[1]TP_Q3100_DRAIN , picture show before and after cleaning ![]() ![]() ![]() and LB300 (It's a filter?) ![]() ![]() I can't find any other spot or phisical damage on this board. J9600 (lifeboat port) also look good. Could you please help me fix this Mac? Any advice or suggestion what to check it's really well accepted. Thank you in advice! ![]() Remove all power & battery. Wait for the capacitors to discharge - a few minutes should be ok to drain out the power off the board.
Then pour IPA (alcohol) and clean each of the referenced spots on the logic board to remove the glowing green swamp juice residue. Use a cotton swab / Q-tip to clean up the areas. Then review the locations again to be sure there are no broken traces. One of the sites is near the CD3215 ACE controller = Power delivery controller which will negotiate the 20V power contract to boot the logic board. Locate the USB connector near this ACE controller and where you see the green puss. Attempt to power the board using that USB Type C connector -> does it work ? If it does, the liquid corrosion is not a fault for this ACE controller. The DRAIN pin you mentioned is linked to the PPBUS_G3H power rail which is a major power feed to the PCB. That is, it must be working ok since your board boots. After the cleaning, the next logic step will be to review the SSD voltage rails on the logic board to be sure that each is present. and watch this video... https://youtu.be/yt0f3sGSZas Last edited by mon2; 09-22-2022 at 04:00 PM.. |

![]() Thank you for the reply mon2!
After cleaning as you suggested I can confirm CD3215 ACE controller works fine, it does negotiate the 20V and I can boot up and charge the battery. I guess you are right for the DRAIN pin as board boot correctly. Quote:

![]() The SSD is considered to be an active component. So it requires power rails to function.
The SSD is soldered onboard. In the schematic, search for the keyword 'SSD' and the pdf search engine will locate the hits and some should be power rails. That will be the first step. Then locate the part they show in the boardview file which will show the location on the logic board. It can take just a single broken trace or contact to be missing and the ssd detection can fail. The linked video if I recall correctly is about a common fault of a resistor that corrodes with liquid spills. Your board had some liquid exposure which is evident with the green film. You may also see a red dot on the pcb which is a liquid detector sticker applied by Foxconn who builds these circuit boards. Once you find a power rail, you can check if the voltage is present with your multimeter. Meter in dc voltage mode. Red probe to the test point. Black to ground like a metal shield. You can start with testing the voltage at the fuse you show in the posted pic - it is the white body part near the CD3215. Just to get some practice. Parts like resistors and capacitors are passive parts. |

![]() OK here I'm.
Upon cheking fuse near CD3215 F3000 I've got 20V when plugged in and continuity is present. But if plug in the other side the other fuse FB200 show me 0 Volts, continuity present. About the Louis video, R9350 related to PPVIN_2V7NAND_LB measures 13.8V in both test point and pin1 and 1.58V on pin 2. Measuring the R9350 in 2000k scale I got 550homs I was looking for any other liquid spill but i cannot find any other at all, it's clean just little bit dusty nearby the usb-c connectors area. Any detector sticker is just white anywhere. Quote:
C9304 - PP0V9_SSD_FIXED - 0.9V diode mode 294 (2K scale) C8724 - PP1V2_SSD_HOT - 1.22V diode mode 328 (2K scale) C8714 - PP1V8_SSD_HOT - 1.8V diode mode 408 (2K scale) C8732 - PP1V2_SSD_COLD - 1.22V diode mode 282 (2K scale) C9323 - PP0V9_SSD_REG - 0.9 diode mode 208 (2K scale) I measured also PP3V3_S5_SSD and it's 3.34V. Seems SSD is powered I hope that this measures can help. Last edited by slimmy182; 09-23-2022 at 12:40 PM.. |

![]() post picture of ssd socket and ofcourse use macbook ssd, or ssd adapter with a good nvme drive as non nvme doesnt work.
check if all capacitor near ssd socket are ok and looks good. |

![]() From your post #6 and following the same thread on the Rossmann forum, the voltage readings look a bit low.
at R9420 P2V7NAND_EN and PICCOLO_VEN1 are 0V This is a show stopper. https://boards.rossmanngroup.com/thr...15/#post-86929 |

![]() Thank you. As my U9400 is burnt I’m waiting to get an other one. But I guess something as changed as my first measures are different. The ones takes in post#6 are correct
What can be the cause? There is anything to check untill new U9400 is arrived? Tanks Last edited by slimmy182; 10-02-2022 at 08:36 AM.. |
