Re: HP EliteBook 845 G7 BIOS Pass

I have a HP EliteBook 845 G7 with a bios password enabled that I have lost.

The mainboard has a Winbond 25Q256JVEN chip on top (this chip has 8 legs visible).
On the underside is another Winbond 25Q256JVEN (this chip has NO legs visible).

I have read most of the posts here and would like to confirm the following:

      1. Do I need to remove both of these chips or just the bottom chip for re-programming?

      2. Would the EZP203 be OK for the reading and re-programming work? (see link below)
      https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003634077363.html

      3. Do I need to upload the BIN file here to have it modified by a specialist or would some of the files already shared here be adequate to unlock the bios?

Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to share with me!

Took me almost a year, but alas I did as instructed.

The pc said someting about doing a bios backup and then it says HP Endpoint Security Controller Problem (Pic 1 in attachment)

I can press enter okay and then I'm back at the familiar despised Power-On Authentication (Pic 2 in attachment)

I spent more time repairing this notebook than using it...

        So what next?

Next - program both spi chips with the corresponding files from the attached archive and you're good to go.

Re: HP EliteBook 845 G7 BIOS Pass

I have found that much of the information in many forums around this problem have been missing a lot of vital information.
After my own research and experience I have documented exactly what worked for me.
I hope that others may find this helpful.

How to remove HP Elite 845 G7 bios password.

The tools you will need are:
EZP2023+ chip programmer (with 12 adaptors kit)
This one has the WSON8x6 adaptor board
            Hxd (Hex editor free software)
Hot air gun with small nozzle or better still a soldering station with hot air
(I used a Dewalt heat gun with digital temp adjustment)
Small soldering iron if you don’t have a soldering station
Flux (I used Craig rosin flux from Jaycar)
Magnifier or electronics microscope (best option!)
Large steel tweezers to grip the chip
Blunt, long steel probe (or similar)
Alcohol and cotton tips for cleaning up after soldering

            1. Remove the back panel of the laptop and carefully remove the battery and motherboard
            a. Note: Take some photos to ensure you know where all of the connectors go before you start!

            2. On the underside of the motherboard identify the chip adjacent to the m/board labels U365 and U366. Make sure you identify pin 1 orientation of the chip onto the M/board (a small dot on chip above pin 1)
            a. Note: This is usually a Winbond 25Q256JVEN WSON8x6 chip with no legs
            b. This chip is the EC (Embedded Controller) chip and NOT the main bios chip found on the top of the board that is labelled U367 inside a white square. The U367 main bios chip does NOT need to be removed! You may find that the main bios chip is also a Winbond 25Q256JVEN, but with legs (SOP8).

            3. Using a hot air gun with a small nozzle, set temperature to 400C and test on scrap 0.7mm solder to ensure it is hot enough to melt solder quickly. Don’t exceed 420C if you need to go higher and the keep air flow to a low / medium rate

            4. Install the EZP2023+ chip reader/programmer software and driver on another Windows PC
            a. I found it easier to install the driver in Device Manager

            5. Mount the removed EC chip onto WSON8x6 adaptor board (soldered) and insert board into EZP2023+ chip reader/programmer.
            a. You will need the 0.7mm solder and quality rosin solder flux.
            b. The magnifying device will be very helpful for all soldering and checking. Make sure you don’t have any bridging solder pads!
            c. Note: The adaptor board should be mounted closest to the lever handle with the solder mounted chip on left side (closest to the power light)
            d. This is important otherwise you can cook the chip!

            6. Plug-in the EZP2023+ hardware unit via USB connector, open the software and press the ‘Test’ button. The EC chip should be instantly recognised, if not check your soldering!

            7. Once the chip has been recognised press the ‘Read’ button.
            a. Note: You will need to read the chip at least 3 times. Save each .BIN file with a different name. (3 separate back-ups)

            8. Open HxD (Hex editor software) and load the first two .BIN files.

            9. Use the Compare tool (Analysis >Data Comparison>Compare) to ensure that both files are exactly the same.
            a. Note: If all three .BIN files are not exactly the same, keep re-reading the chip and saving until you get identical files, this is important.

            10. Do the same with the third file, comparing with the first etc.

            11. If all files are identical move to the next step.

            12. In Hxd, search for NvramActiveRegn, usually at line 37000 in your .BIN file

            13. Using the edit tool, select all data from line 37000 to 37380 (or sometimes a bit further down, select all of the data in this block) and fill with no data (FF)
            a. Note: This is the area of data where the bios password is stored.

            14. Save this file as your new .BIN file (with no password)

            15. Using the EZP2023+ software Erase the contents of the chip.
            a. Note: Set the Fill function to Word (16bits) FFFF before you start erasing.

            16. After erasing read the contents of the chip and check that it is completely empty (all FFs), if it is not empty run erase again. Once the chip is empty of data it is then ready for the new .BIN file (you can check file in HxD to ensure there is only FFs from top to bottom).

            17. In the EZP2013+ software Open the new .BIN file with no password and then select Write.

            18. Once the writing to the chip is complete read the contents of the chip and once again compare with new .BIN file using the HxD (Hex editor), ensuring that the files match exactly!

            19. If the files match exactly, de-solder the chip from the adaptor and re-mount onto the motherboard using a hot-air gun set at 420c.
            a. Note: Be careful to have very little solder on the central pad under the chip otherwise getting it to melt is difficult
            b. Pre-fill the pads of the m/board and chip with a tiny amount of fresh solder before you attempt to join the two with solder. Apply a generous amount of flux and gently hold the chip in place with a long blunt tipped metal probe (make sure this is not too large as it will siphon heat away from the chip and hinder soldering)
            c. Use the white position lines on the motherboard to assist with chip alignment.
            d. Once the chip is fixed, apply more flux and gently and quickly run a small soldering iron along each side of the visible pads (4 each side) to smooth the pad mounds.
            e. Check that there is no bridging between the pads (excess solder).
            f. Clean the work area with alcohol on cotton tips or small brush

            20. This process requires some reasonable soldering skills and practicing on an old motherboard can help to develop the required skills.
