I asked at a recycle place and they told me that once an item is placed inside the recycle "cage" or "area", it is their property. Removal is considered theft.

Arf, I often hear that from others "dumpster divers". I might just be lucky.

How old were the screens that people were giving you on average?

Most were less than 4 yrs old. One guy gave me a 6 month old Emerson with the store receipt and extended warranty from "Circuit City" ... Too bad they went out of business, closed their doors and couldn't honor the warranty lol.
