    OCZ Failed Capxon Caps

    Hey all,

    I have an OCZ Powerstream 600W (OCZGSX600) that has been faithful to me for many years but recently has failed. I cracked it open to find it full of Capxon caps with one noticeably bulged leaking top. I ran to Radioshack () to grab a similar cap and swapped it out with no help, then discovered another nicely hidden cap that has also blown. I've decided to recap the whole PSU with some quality caps

    Here is an inventory of what's on the PSU

    Capxon Caps
    (1) 420uF 420V LP 85C
    (2) 2200uF 6.3v KF 105C (Labeled C710)
    (5) 1000uF 16v A3C1 105C
    (1) 47uF 25v

    One oddball OST Capacitor
    (1) 2200uF 16v

    I can't seem to find many 420uF caps so I'm going to swap it for a 470uF 105C similarly sized. My big question is could someone recommend me a quality brand/series to replace these with?

    OCZGSX600 tells me that's a GameXStream power supply, not a powerstream.

    There's no CapXon LP series rated for 420uF and 420v - in fact 420uF is not a standard value, so you'll have a hard time finding any such capacitor. You probably mean 470uF. Either way, for that primary capacitor, the capacity can vary a bit, it's not critical.

    470uF / 420v is 40mm in diameter, 52 mm in height, the ripple is 3.9 A (but this value is basically Capxon bullshit).

    2200uF 6.3 v have 1470mA ripple and 0.095 impedance.
    1000uF 16v have about 1350mA ripple and 0.06 ohm impedance. (if they're also KF series)

    You need to pick capacitors that have equal or higher ripple, along with equal or slightly lower (but not by much) impedance. Last, make sure they fit: the capacitors seem to be all 10mm in diameter but who knows, some may be 8mm and 10mm ones won't fit.

      If I may add you can find all of these value caps on Mouser.com as well, they don't have any min purchase. Also, you can get Panasonic caps, which in my opinion are the best ones you can get and they are the only ones I use when I replace a cap. You will find all of these in Panasonic's FM Series and FC Series Caps.

        Thanks for the reply! You are right about the GameXStream, it's been a while since I've tinkered with my PC

        The bizarre thing is that the cap is indeed a 420uf 420V (or at least labeled so), I have it right here in my hand. I couldn't even find that value in the Capxon LP series datasheets and that's what made me end up posting here haha. It's measured case size is 30mm wide and 47mm long

        I'll pull the rest of the caps and ensure their specs match before ordering, thanks much!

          I may have an old datasheet then. Weird.

          Then my recommendations for the large capacitor won't be good, as the smallest I linked to is 35 mm in diameter.
          Go through the capacitors section there, filter by voltage, capacitance and diameters that would work on your power supply, then sort by ripple so that the highest value is at the top.
          Then go through them and pick one that's in stock and has a convenient price and a reasonable ripple value ( I would say 2A or better)

          As for the others, I don't contradict Peter, there are much better capacitors than the ones I recommended, but those series I picked capacitors from are closer to the specifications of the old capacitors.

          The old capacitors have kind of a high ESR/impedance for a power supply at 0.06-0.09 ohm, so it may not be impossible that the power supply relies on this impedance to stabilize the output. Going with too good capacitors with much lower impedance may cause issues with the power supply.

            the 1000uF are 105C SY series, however the SY series datasheet I found only says the series is from 1-330uF... wtf?

              They can't be SY because SY is a miniature series, only 7 mm in diameter. I doubt yours are of such small diameter.

              FSP (the company that made the psu for ocz) isn't usually that stupid.

                Turns out they were TEAPO SY series caps haha

                I've found good replacements for all of the caps now. They're all panasonic FR series except the oddball sized 2200uF 8x25mm, the only one I could find with this size was Nichicon HM series at 8x20mm

                The LP spec sheet for the 470uF doesn't give impedance numbers, neither does the replacement I found

                    I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!
