Re: Any experiences with this ESR meter circuit?

and i gave up on it because i'm just extremely cheap about some things...like the things i already have(my analog diy meter is still working) or things i can work-around (i can measure capacitance with analog ohm meter, it turns out...not terribly precise, but precise enough to see what's going on...).

now i'll probably buy cheap soldering station and one more iron within that price....
    hehe...

but if i was looking for built esr meter today, i would buy mike's esr micro, yes.

sam, perhaps i'll send you few badcaps so we can compare readings, me on my analog meter, and you on esr micro...

Good idea ,that would be interesting seeing what the values were .

Why not use a basic stamp from parallax? very easy to program , they also make the propellor chip which look's very interesting.

I've already built a 'Blue ESR meter' for myself but this circuit looks pretty nice too (perhaps inspired by Bob Parker's design?)

I thought PICs could be programmed directly with a serial port and only 3 wires?

            Hello all
Perhaps somebody will take over here this project.
I think this is the first attempt at an amateur level,to make a digital ESR meter with a resolution of the 0,0001ohm.

If it can accurately measure down to 0.0001 Ohm that is quite impressive (to me anyway!)

Pity the thing is in Russian and I can't read it.

Google translate got about 10 paragraphs in and then called it quits...

                Hello,Agent24
He can really MEASURE,and not an approximate estimate,as many ESR meter.
                This is really impressive
If there was a desire to do,try to help as mush as possible.
Scheme itself is not complicated, higher demands are made only to the radio components, and it is clear.
I also hope to repeat it.
Already started to collect radio components.

I think the DIY kit is not bad and not that expensive.

If you are not on a budget, this one would although make fun

I made for myself this ESR meter.
                  It cost me 20 euros.
                  Works very well

last time i didn't have any rs232 level converters lying around so i used a simple low voltage parallel PIC programmer.
i couldn't find a decent burn tool that supports that simple programmer, and the one I used was rather crappy. somehow I messed things up, I guess. i'm not sure if I fried that PIC, and the whole thing has gone to the "unfinished projects" box for now.
I have the parts for a serial programmer now, so once I've passed that nasty oral exam I'm currently learning for I'm gonna dig it up and give it another try.

@gonzo: that first ELV circuit really looks good. i might give that a chance, too.
Did you ever get anywhere with either of those?

                                It´s really working ESR meter(ESR/R/L/C/F).

Yesterday I stumbled upon this schematic, and it looks pretty decent, since it also measures capacitance and has a 2x16 LCD display.
has anyone here ever successfully built this one?
                                  Any opinions welcome.
Hello! I just finished the construction of the device, (with some changes in programming and hardware, because I used an PIC 16F690 instead of 16F873), and my impressions are not so good, because:
                                  1) it takes too much time to charge (and measure) a larger C;
                                  2) still, if you have enough patience, the result is quite accurate for capacitance measuring,
                                  BUT :
                                  3) because measuring is made by charging a C from nearly zero to 2.5V, it's more likely to not be able to use this meter in circuits, and also polarised capacitors may read different if connected "upside-down"!!!
                                  4) also, no overvoltage protection are available!!!
                                  5) precision in ESR measuring is only 0.1 Ohm !!!

So I decided to build another one, using the russian version http://pro-radio.ru/measure/3288/.

                                  Sorry for my English.
