    New to recapping (and thanks)

Hey I just wanted to thank you for setting up this web site. I'm still green when it comes to recapping, however I'm experienced with soldering and so forth as I regularly replace defective power jacks on laptops. Until this week, I hadn't really put much thought into recapping a board.

I had an HP desktop which would shut down when I tried to reinstall XP. I did all the routine things a person would suspect with this problem: check memory, try a new processor, check the heatsink, fan and thermal paste, try a different power supply, hard drive and remove PCI cards. I even flashed the BIOS. After running across this site I decided to spend 11 bucks on some capacitors (got the Rubycons of course) and that computer is good as new now. The originals showed absolutely no physical sign of being bad, but I understand they don't always bulge or leak when this happens. Too bad I already pulled out half my hair trying to figure this one out...haha

Thanks to this site I've caught on to something that could save my customers some serious money (and of course make some myself). I appreciate the open discussion as well. Thanks, guys!

The brand(s) of caps?? Replacing power jacks on laptops could practically be a career.

Power Supplies should be boring: No loud noises, no bright flashes, and no bad smells.

I'm still new to identifying them, but I think the ones I removed looked like Teapos, so I understand that was the problem in the first place. Perhaps that is why they didn't show any obvious signs of problems?

As for the power jacks, yes, I get a bunch of laptops shipped to me every week to perform that repair.

Where do you buy replacement jacks?

The more common ones I get from Mouser and places like that. Some of the others, like the ones used in Sonys, I get from the usual places you find on the net that sell them.
