    Dell U2718Q MStar controller overheating

    Hello to the forum!

I am currently troubleshooting the Dell U2718Q monitor, which will work perfectly until it randomly shuts down and after a number of minutes will power on and work again, until it randomly (but quicker) shuts down again.

After some investigating i came to the conclusion that this is due to the Mstar MST9U37Q1 controller overheating, causing the monitor to shut down. When the controller is cool enough it will start working again. The power supply voltages at all times seem normal, nothing else feels hot on the board and by using a hair drier to play with the temperature it seems that this is the culprit. The controller has a soldered on heatsink which had a very bad application of thermal paste underneath. Replacing the thermal paste did nothing but to prolong the usage of the monitor.

Searching for datasheets or schematics for the ic and monitor showed nothing. Has anybody any clue to the solution of this problem?

    Thanks a lot!

Check the voltage of Mstar MST9U37Q1 with a scope. It's possible to have high ripple on some rails.
