![]() HP Pavilion TouchSmart 14 SleekBook suddenly developed power switch fault. On testing of the power switch connector flex using Diode mode of digital multimetre, I discovered that 2 of the terminals short across each other. Please, can this switch be repaired and how can go about its troubleshooting and repair? See attached pictures.

![]() See attached. Is this the ON / OFF pushbutton ?
Which pins are shorted to each other ? Such pushbuttons are common with 4 pins. One side will have 2 pins shorted to each other. Then the OTHER side will have 2 pins shorted to each other. When you press the button, the 2 different sides will short to each other. Confirm this with the meter in resistance mode. On the PCB are white silk screen text markings of 1, 2, 3, 4. Post the details of which pins are shorting. It sounds like the switch is working properly but if not, the switches are very common to source. Update: PAD 2 on the PCB = ground. There will be many points on the PCB with a common connection to ground so this is OK. Last edited by mon2; 07-05-2022 at 07:03 AM.. |

![]() @Mon2. Yes, it's ON/OFF Pushbutton.
See the images I attached and see if I passed the right information about what I had explained in my previous post. Thanks. |

![]() Use resistance mode - lowest scale.
Then check the resistance on the green PCB, pin 2 - one meter lead. pin 3 - other meter lead. what is the resistance ? then repeat the test on the FPC cable with exposed pads 2 & 3. what is the resistance ? Also, test to see where each pad is mating on the circuit board. Guessing that that one side of the switch will be a contact on the FPC cable. Other side of the switch will be on another pad on the FPC cable. When you press the switch (closing the contacts) - the pads on the cables will short to each other. |

![]() @mon2. Resistance are as below.
Resistance on pin 2 and pin when meter is set to 200 ohms = 0.06 Resistance on the FPC cable with exposed pads 2 and 3 when meter is set to 200 ohms = 0.04 |

![]() Again, the four pads of the power button have continuity with which rails on the fpc cable (1 - 6) ?

![]() You misjudged the pin number, 2 and 3 are actually 4 and 5.
