    Burned hp motherboard

    Hi,

My storage computer died on me with a bang.
When I opened it up at first, it looked like the power supply.
But when I got a closer look it turned out to be a burned chip on the motherboard.

Is it possible to repair this?

    Motherboard : mcp61pm-hm Rev. 1.0b

I think I just answered my own question.
    Brushed off the dust.

Pretty sure I won't be able to repair this motherboard.

Might depend on whether the traces along the front are intact.

This is the best pic I can find so far.
      Anyone recognise the logo?

Can you try and clean up the
board to see what the board description was - may have been L ?
Were there any suggestion of copper coil in the debris.

Perhaps remove the cap to get extra light on the area. Perhaps the cap leaked electrolyte and shorted whatever it was.

LATER - Notice this board is not quite the same!!

        I removed the cap.
Melted a bit on the side but doubt that it's defective (I would replace it if I can fix the other part)

Getting hard to clean it more than I have already done.
The burn marks won't go away.

It is a poly switch (resettable fuse.)

Common problem, can happen if one USB or firewire port is shorted, and will slowly and surely burn away.
Please do not PM me with questions! Questions via PM will not be answered. Post on the forums instead!

if you can clean off the carbon tracking and no traces are damaged it may work.you lose that port though.

I think you are gonna have a hard time with that.

                1. That Capacitor melted on your board, seeing it burned part of the board. To fix that, remove the burned capacitor, then clean the burned part.
                2. Check the number on of the capacitor, look for a replacement and put it in.
                3. Check for other burned capacitors and resistors before using it.

Well, just try, might still work.

Part number? Motherboard model? Can you get the replacement part?
To clean off the part use some flux and rubbing alcohol. Flux is not only used for soldering
                  Guns don't solve problems. I'll take 12
