Common Failures on a GE Fridge Board Example (WR55X10775, WR55X11072 200D4852G025)

I've worked on more than a few of these boards and the outlined parts in red seemed to be the most common. These board vary in parts, especially the number of relays on them. The part numbers listed in the title are examples.

These boards (like most appliance boards nowadays) have a kind of protective shellac coated on them. I use professional strength Good Off on solder joins to remove what I can so I can get good contact with my meter leads.

A schematic exists showing what each relay is responsible but I don't have that handy right now.

I have a GE fridge (Model Number GSS23GSKNCSS) that recently gone south. the issue is that defrost heater doesn't turn on as expected. I replaced the main control board (part #WR55X31689) to get defrost function working again. I'm curious how I proceed with diagnosing the defrost issue and find corresponding component on the board.

Fixing appliance control boards, first look at the soldering for the relays and connectors. Those seems OK in the pictures though.
But there's some kind of soldering disaster just under the transformer where "70633401.1" is printed on the board, above R163, R166. What happened there?

It's got 5 relays, which one is for the defrost heater? K6 bigger for the compressor motor.

For now I would guess it's a bad relay for the defrost heater. Defrost function sometimes includes a temperature sensor at the evaporator.

AiSHi brand chinese electrolytic capacitors I don't find that good, the blue ones like C111 and neighbors I would test too.

I see a tiny fuse "M3" near J15 pads, as well as the main Belfuse by C88 if anyone else works on one of these.

thank you for the reply! that's very helpful! I'll look into above mentioned components for potential failure.

K4 seems to be the relay for defrost heater, since to its left, L1 is marked as compressor / defrost.
