820-2936-B: Is that a thermal pad(s) under the cover?

After replacing the thermal paste on the heat sink, I noticed a metal cover over U1800 & U3600. I want to know what thermal compound was used, is it paste or pad, how thick should the pad be if it's a thermal pad(s). Is there any thermal reason to even mess with cover, what do you do?

looks like the smaller is a thermal pad

the bigger one is a pad of paste that is pushed down once and acts like crappy thermal paste
