And aside from being a meme, there is a high-rate of catastrophic failure of certain models of Gigabyte PSUs. If you have one of these in you're system you should probably replace it ASAP, and I'd personally avoid Gigabyte PSUs in general after this fiasco (not that I used them anyhow):

          Re: Gigabyte exploding power supply

i'v seen the video's of people blowing them up with programable loads,
but has anybody seen a teardown yet where the problem is tracked down??
(because there's gonna be a hell of a lot of them on ebay cheap!!)

The youtube video I linked in my post goes into the details. It looks like they're popping MOSFETS and the over temp protection is not working properly (or possibly not at all).

              Re: Gigabyte exploding power supply

I've heard (but have not researched) that it is due to a design flaw related to how the mosfets are driven. The OCP circuit might not be the main issue here as many have blown under normal / moderate load.

Interested in what comes of this.

The new version with all the changes made.

In theory, one can get a "bad" psu for less money or even for free and apply the changes in this video and make it safe, is this true?
