DYMO Rhino 5200 Industrial Label Maker that the backlight does not work any ideas

I just bought a used one for a decent price for a used device it prints very nicely and clean and clearly so I am not going to complain about it but I would like to get it working again anyone have any suggestions on how to repair this back light

If I can not get the controller to work properly then I will probably have an external power supply for the backlight because it is difficult to see the screen without out it

One —>the LEDs might be bad
Two —> the buck converter or regular might be bad
Three —> the controller might not be turning on
Four —> or might be bad soldering joints or broken wires

What my plan is to buy another one that is for parts only no guarantee that it will work as it suppose to
Very reasonable price if the eBay seller will accept my offer

The reason I bought it was because I used one from a customer who I work on his machines when they do not work correctly to mark a bunch of wires with heat shrink tubing very nice label maker I want to buy one a few years ago but they were very expensive when they first came out on the market

I want to mark the BMS protection board wiring so if I ever have to put newer battery cells in an enclosure I do not have google the version I have to find how to wire it up

The eBay seller did accept my offer so I bought it—>

The label maker that I bought for parts that the display is bad but the backlight was working so I looked at both board where the LEDs hooked to the circuit board and I see that the one that the backlight did not work the control transistor had fallen off the circuit board because the soldering joints looked like they did not get enough solder on the soldering pads

So I carefully removed the transistor off the board that the backlight was working but display was bad it looked like the display had separated because the one that works if you lightly press on it you can see the image come up and disappear on the one that does not work if you press the screen you do not see anything at all just a piece of glass

So the repair is completely done and the label maker is put back together and working properly again

Awesome! Hopefully it was cheap enough and worth the repair. I just scored a DYMO label printer too, but mine must be hooked up to a computer and USB a port.

you can get cheap cartridges for dymo and brother from aliexpress.

funny thing about the dymo/rino printers - they are badly made.
i got a dead one cheap that needed the ceramic resonator replaced - origonal had a broken lead.

I probably paid a little to much for shipping because I had buy the second one to fix the first one but I have spare parts for so that not a bad thing

          The second was $25.00
          The first one was $67.00

The shipping was between $12.00 to $15.00

I had found some for sale used but in most cases it did not come with the lit-ion battery pack and the switching power supply wall wart and the cost was much more expensive starting at $150.00

The second one did not have any battery pack or power supply but did come with a 3/4” heat shrink tubing cartridge which about $5.00 or maybe a little bit more than that

I have to agree with you I found several that the screen was not working properly or not functioning at all

I do not know if it is an issue with the way the screen is made is the issue or not

How do you like it I have seen them before but I have to have ones that are battery powered because most of time I do not have power outlets available when I need to use one

I have a couple of bothers models but what I do not like about them is that it uses AAA batteries and eats for lunch in a very short amount of time the batteries are made like shit and leak all over the place and because it has two batteries per level you bump the label maker it turns off sometimes while it printing I wish that they would make a 18650 version and be done with the AAA batteries

First I thought I am getting a NOS in original packaging DYNO handheld label printer from an outfit around here that's trading hands. Turns out it wasn't a handheld, rather a desktop DYMO Label Writer 450. I tried it once and it does work. I don't have any much use for it besides maybe printing an sticker address label? Anyhow, free is free!
As a handheld printer I've got an old Brother P-Touch. It uses like 6 AAA's, but I only feed it Eneloops.

Dymo went DRM with their labellers, they now have a RFID chip in the roll apparently. Post pics of the backlight LED and board to see what to change.

I'm also using a Brother P-Touch labeller, tired of the batteries and used a junkbox AC adapter but it's 9VDC REVERSE-POLARITY center is (-) just a stupid way to go.
I can never figure what font I'll get, it has a mind of its own. But cartridges are cheap on Ali.

Alright I will try to do this later on today when I get home from work

I have several rolls of heat shrink and tubing and I do not see any RFID chip in any of them

i think it's the 550 that has that - check here:

Interesting read on how they did it. Luckily mine is only a 450, the older version.

Here is the picture that you asked for sorry I did not get to it earlier

The resistor was removed also so I could get to the transistor pads
Unfortunately there is no part number on the transistor ( that I could see or make out )

The plus and minus is where the backlight connects are

I hope this helps you with what you need to know

                            One note

The LCD display is glued to the backlight plastic piece and is very difficult to remove from it the display cable is the flat ribbon type cable is some how glued or soldered to the circuit board and I really do not know if you could replace the display and get it to work correctly or not

On another note I do not know if I would buy a label maker machine if it has a RFID tag or a other device to make it proprietary useable consumable to able to use it UNLESS it is the only company that makes what I need to use to make a repair job easier down the road but I would NOT be a happy customer about this type of nonsense

There only a couple of companies that make a label maker that does heat shrink tubing and this is the reason I bought this one is because I want to label the wiring to the BMS cable individual wires so I do not have to remember how to wire in the future ( the pre made label books are a pain in the ass to use I personally do not like using them

switching the gnd line any NPN will do

I will keep this mind if I have to replace it if it stops working again

I got the second one in that the screen dose not display anything at all but the backlight does function I sure would like to know what is the failure when this happens is there an easy way to determine if it is really a screen display issue or is the LCD controller that is the issue and burns the screen

What I do not like is the fact that they glued the display to the backlight and then the backlight plastic to the circuit board so it makes it very difficult to troubleshoot the issue because it easily damaged trying to remove it

I am not impressed with the normal type of label that this company offers for this label maker it is very difficult to remove the protective tape off the back I think that unless I am using the 3/4 “ tape I will use my Bothers label maker it is much easier to remove the protective tape from the back of it I also bought the vinyl tape I going to see if I like this tape or not

they changed it to save money,
the older tapes had paper backing with diaginal burns that meant you could split the paper down the middle to get a grip on it

Exactly what the problem is it is tape and it is the worst thing ever this was in one of label makers that I bought for parts so I just did not buy one it to try it but I can tell you I will not buy any unless I need to use the 3/4” inch version but I will only buy one at a time as I need them
