Did you know that someone in the US (don't remember the report) calcualted that if all linear power bricks where exchanged for switched ones an enire nuclear power plant could be shutdown due to the powersavings...

Yea, and if those stand by things all only suck about 1w from the net instead of up to 40w e.g. for an Sony TV i think youcan shut down something more.

I have two gateway PC's that use big black power bricks.

Just noticed the Profile 2 in the corner folding, it also has brick.

now, can anyone explain to me why two pronged AC cords are polarized? By the nature of AC, polarization shouldn't be necessary, and in fact many old appliances are NOT polarized.
              Ludicrous gibs!

those figure 8 plugs. they can be plugged in up side down and still work. still i would like to know if neutral even does anything.

I also had something to do with a non-grounded computer. i rested my hand on top of the computer CRACK huge sparks hit my hand and the computer promptly turned itself off. turned it back on(still works today and this was 3 years ago) all was well.

it goes to show that ground is compulsory on todays computers.

The Swedish prongs are desinged so they can be put in any way... Of course polarity doesn't matter in a single phase AC circuit...

                    Basic electronic knowledge resources
                    by swofra
                    Hey all,
I've got a few XBOX power problems but don't know much about anything concerning electronics troubleshooting outside of replacing caps. Instead of coming on here and wasting people's time being confused when they say check rectifier, transistor, resistor, etc or whatever it may be and then having to ask "what is that?", I wanted to learn and build up a knowledge base first so I'm not completely clueless and can apply the good advice people give without confusing the situation more by not knowing what i am doing.
Is there a good thread or source, either on this...

                    Connecting Neutral/Earth together
                    by Dannyx
Good day folks. Recently my company has, in a kinda-sorta-way, nominated me to join the "security systems team" which involves going to various sites to install alarm systems and CCTV cameras...not the best of positions, since I've gravitated pretty far away from my beloved laptop and electronics repair, but at least the pay is adequate (enough....for now) and I'll definitely be moving back to those once my boss decides it's the right time, but I digress.

The reason I'm asking about how mains grounding works is because more often than not, I have to connect up the alarm...

Connecting an isolation to mains earth
                    by Nevillet
                    Hi All,

I have acquired a hefty isolation transformer for use on(under) the bench and have a question about earth bonding.

Apart from the live & neutral connections, should the transformer itself be connected to mains earth?

If so, should the device under test, powered by the IT also be connected to the transformer earth?

                    Many thanks in advance.

                    good quality DIP sockets
                    by tony359
                    Hi there,

Can anybody recommend a source of good quality DIP sockets please? I'm getting mine from Ebay and they feel very flimsy. If I plug a previously desoldered chip, the sockets get permanently deformed and the pins to solder through the PCB are very, very flimsy...

                    Thanks!
                    Tony
