I discovered this when I was identifying infrared emitters from infrared detectors.
My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

I have one soldered to a BNC connector that I plug into my DSO for testing remotes or for decoding IR codes.
Putting a 47k and a small cap across it improves the wave shape.

Works for visible light LED's as well ( except white as these have a phosphor coat so they are actually blue or UV leds so only respond to blue or UV light poorly) and you can see how the colour needs to be a shorter wavelength, else you get no output no matter how bright the illumination.
