    Pioneer VSX-405

This is an older home theater receiver that I was using in my studio with a cd player. It was working fine until I disconnected it when I moved my studio. It sat for months, and now when I hooked it back up, the front speakers do not work. There is output in the rear, but not the front. All speakers are good, wiring hookup is correct. Someone told me that by sitting a capacitor could go bad. If so, does anyone know which capacitor would be bad?

    Thanks

Capacitors shouldn't go bad by sitting around. In fact, it is quite the opposite...Electrolytics will only go bad under load, or when they are forced to handle large amounts of current or voltage higher than their specified rating.

However, if a capacitors is going to die, my thoughts would lean towards the power supply filtering capacitors which are exposed to some really rough DC and gets pounded by ripple current. They are typically the biggest capacitors and located near the power inlet.

However, it could be just about anything else as well. The chips could have overheated at some point, or an interconnect gone loose. So just look around inside...

    Good luck.

i'd say faulty speaker relays and/or cold solder joints.. (possibly on the relays too)

edit: if it actually has speaker relays that is

It took me longer to get to this, but I wanted to report on the progress. I opened it up, and looked for obvious bad joints or burn marks. Not finding any, I took my spray flux cleaner and a toothbrush, and cleaned all the circuit boards. There was a lot of dirt in there. I put it back together, hooked it up and IT WORKS! Thanks for all the advise. I love this site.
