USB not working on Asus P4C800-E Deluxe

    USB not working on Asus P4C800-E Deluxe

    Board has no physical damage I can find, except for a plastic corner broken off one Sata connector

    Has been updated to 2nd last BIOS (non-Beta) - I've found last Beta has pickiness problems with certain graphics cards

    Also tried downgrading BIOS

    Fresh install of WinXP shows usual USB stuff in Device Manager

    But testing with USB key lights up the key's LED, and that's it

    Asking WinXP to search for new hardware with the key plugged in, makes no difference

    Fuses near the USB ports show continuity, and I can't see any burnt traces

    Same outcome with a USB bracket plugged into one of the board's headers

    Have replaced all original LTEC 1000uf caps with Sanyo WG

    Various postings on the Net reckon i865 & i875 southbridges are prone to USB going faulty

    Seems to me that USB data lines are kaput - should I give up on it, or try something else ?

    I've come across many i865 boards with dead USB ports. Have you tried all of the ports? Usually a few of them are dead, but it's rare that all of them are nonfunctional. I suppose it's possible, though.

      the i855gm in my old laptop blew out all 6 ports (2 on the unit, 4 on the dock). only fix was a new mainboard

        Latest chipset (Intel) drivers package installed? [ 7.2.1.1003 ]

        Overclock?

        Was a 1394 cable/connector ever used on those mobo connectors USB56, USB78?

        Done BIOS reset?

        BIOS default settings from menu?

        Enabled in BIOS? (Advanced header)

        Delete ports from within XP Device Manager, exit and shut down - COLD.
        Unplug mains to PSU and push power button on computer (lights flash, mobo light is extinguished)
        Reconnect power and restart system.
        XP discover ports?

        Does it find USB keyboard or mouse?

          Here is the blurb on that:

          Since mid-2004, the large motherboard manufacturers noticed an increased complaint ratio with motherboards equipped with ICH5. A cause was the insufficient ESD tolerance of certain ICH5 steppings. [In other words the early versions.]

          In particular, when connecting USB devices via front panels, the chips died by discharges of static electricity. Intel reacted to the problem by shipping ICH5 with increased ESD tolerance. Effective ESD preventive measures on USB ports are difficult and costly, since they can impair signal quality of the USB-2.0 high-speed signals. Many motherboard manufacturers had omitted the necessary high-quality safety devices for front panel connectors for cost reasons.

          So to have the problem you need all three....
          1: Early version of southbridge.

            find a USB card, theyre really cheap now a days

              I've tried Intel's 6.3.0.1007 package which I thought was latest for i875

              Not overclocked

              Don't know history of board - anything's possible from the past

              Reset BIOS then load default settings every time I try a different BIOS version

              Is enabled in BIOS (doubt it'd show in Windows, otherwise) - also tried the 4 ports option, instead of 8

              Ports were discovered from a fresh install of XP - haven't tried deleting them, to see if they're re-discovered

              PSU has its own On/Off switch, so definitely mobo light extinguished for various tries

              Haven't tried USB keyboard or mouse - guess I should

                I have tried all four of the board's own ports, plus a bracket connected to at least one of the board's USB headers

                It's a Rev. 2.00, so late model southbridge combined with late model board cost shaving

                I have a NEC chipset USB card, but prefer not use it if I can get onboard ports to work

                    BTW, the Sata connector with broken plastic does detect a disk, so I think unlikely to be the culprit

                        What resistance datalines have to ground?
                        And once more: very common problem with ICH5, you can't fix that. Thanks god, that mainboard at least starts

                            That's only if ICH5 is the actual problem.
                            If you just see an ICH5 there and assume that's the problem you may be missing an easy fix.

                            Also as it's know the problem is lack of ESD tolerance for ICH5 you could add ESD filters before you break the southbridge.

                                  You don't have a Printer, USB - SATA bridge or just active USB hub? Strange

                                  Easy fix is a $10 PCI card.

                                    He did mention that he has a NEC chipset PCI card (for USB). However he would prefer not to use it...and I can relate to this.

                                      Where would I start for diagnosis ? - had a desultory play with DMM testing MOSFETs in the USB area, without identifying anything wrong

                                        See if you have +5v and ground at the ports.
                                        If you don't the device isn't getting power.

                                        What I've done when I wanted front USB and had to use a card is to take a USB cable and clip one end to connect to the front ports then run the other end out the back and plug it into the USB card port.
                                        Mostly did that for old P3 boards to get USB2 out front. [Instead of USB1.]
