Try using an external display. Hook up to VGA out and see what happens. This will determine whether it is in the onboard screen or the video processing.

Shut up. My dv9000 w/ the infamous 8400M GS still works fine, and i bought it for $300 last year and abuse it every day.

@ OP: It's probably the video chip fault, yes. Try the ghetto fix: BAKE IT!!! Take board out, remove everything from it including CMOS battery, wrap it in aluminum foil leaving only the GPU exposed, put it on 4 foil balls on the cooking tray (don't allow the board to touch the tray, the foil balls must be large enough to suspend it), put into oven and bake. 7 minutes at 210C has always done it for me. If in doubt use temperature probe or IR thermometer. After the 7 minutes pass, open the oven door and allow the inside to cool down to room temp before taking the board out.

I didn't have to do this on my own unit but i fixed other peoples' laptops by this method (if only they knew what i did...).

The most important thing to ensure that the repair lasts, is to replace the laughable thermal pad that HP used with a copper or aluminum shim cut and grinded down as to fit perfectly, it has to fill the space without bending the board. Apply good quality thermal paste on both sides of the shim (preferably Arctic Silver), put shim between GPU and heatsink, assemble laptop and enjoy. Should last at least an year this way.

ok well tbh my hp worked for AN ENTIRE YEAR before having problems).
by the time i accidentally spilled wate over it (at around the 2yr mark)...i had done the following to get it to (barely) keep running:
              -hdd failed- replaced
-overheating - took out mobo and cpu cooler, cleaned out hs and put as5 on it - fixed
-replaced hinge mounts (where the hinges screw into the laptops main body
-supergluyed the cd drive in (kept falling out)
-had to apply pressure to the pwr button area to get the power button to work
-the lightup hp logo on the back started going out...i opened the laptop and found wher the wire was screwed up and hotglued it in place...

and it was a dv4-1145go (core2duo, intel gpu junk...
it was on sale at best buy

You could always take the laptop to the monitor. That is if you have power in the shed.If not,run an extension cord out.I would also have to say that you have a problem with the video chip not making a complete connection with the motherboard.I have at least ten of them here that either boot up with no video, scrambled video,or the built in wireless doesn't work. They are Compaq
V3000,V6000,HP DV2000,DV6000,DV9000,and the list goes on.HP had a "recall" on alot of them because of these problems.I hope this helps.Thank You very much!

                    Re: HP pavilion dv9000

I HAD a dv9000. My problem is that I went to HP update. they told me my BIOS needed an update. OK I said. I did that and the BIOS update said it had updated successfully.
That is the problem with mine. with that new BIOS, it never worked again. spoiled a perfectly good laptop. I joined the literally thousands of laptops that were made crippled by this update. there is no fix. What pisses me off is that they are still serving that file, crippling more dv9000's each day. It's not right but you see if they stopped serving the file, that would be saying that they are guilty, and they wont do that. They cant make a mistake. Only humans are prone to err.

The only way I think you can fix it would be to remove the cmos chip and replace it with one that is flashed with a good firmware revision. I know in desktops these chips are usually a socketed chip for easy removal however I dont know about the laptop that you have. If you can take the chip out, the company may replace it for free. I had a friend that did exactly what you did but that was on a desktop, he sent the chip in and they didnt charge him for a replacement - probably cause they could simply erase the one he sent in and reuse it.

hi im new here and also want to share something about hp dv2000.. a week ago a customer called me up to see his laptop (hp pavillion dv2000)when i turned the power on and the problem is no video display.. i search everything in the net & most cases of the hp is the same as id got.. luckily i found solution that is to replaced the cmos battery because it failed to produce specified voltage (it should be 3v) then also part of the solution is to update the bios ...i did and up to now the laptop is still running fine
