    MSI GE76 Raider 11UH Super I/O replacement

So I have an MSI GE76 11UH that needs a new Super I/O. The problem is that it's a BGA Super I/O.

How do these get programmed? Do they receive programming from an EC chip on the board or is there another process? I've had to do Super I/O replacements in the past and those had EC firmware on the website.

I don't see EC firmware for the GE76 11UH (my model) on the MSI website but instead I only see the BIOS firmware.

Post the topside markings of the bga EC being referenced.

This device without the 2 suffix is available on AliExpress. One review said it works. You should ping the developers of svod to ask on the programmer details. Unless you see a local flash device, the flash must be internal and programmed in-system.

I guess first make sure this EC doesn't have its own external EEPROM. I don't know if it's programmable or not as there is no datasheet for it.

But in general, and AFAIK, there isn't a readily available programmer socket for a BGA EC. SVOD don't have one currently, only the QFP-128 ZIF socket for regular 128 pins EC's. However you can still use the keyboard connector to interface to a ITE/ENE EC for programming, you just need to know which pins. This might be tough without a schematic or datasheet for this EC.

Programming socket would be the best thing. I don't trust anything that comes from China these days is 'new', so the socket would be the only way to know if it's blank (or working) before putting it on the board.

Ok well the seller got back to me and said that the chip doesn't need to be programmed and that it will program itself.

So even if it is the case, what do I program onto it? There is no firmware available on the MSI website except for the BIOS firmware.

There must be some interconnect on the logic board that will reflash this device upon power up if it is found to be corrupt or missing using the main bios as the starting point (boot loader). On this note, does the board power to offer a display without this component?

The EC FW is in the bios at offset 1400000 ,its in the first padding region, open the bios with UEFITool extract as-is ,its 160KB .To find ENE firmware with a hex editor look for a few keywords like haru and J7IFT

EC needs to be blank though for it to auto program from BIOS. Have to trust that what you are getting is indeed new.

I did ask the SVOD team about programming BGA EC's, and they responded they will be bringing out a programming socket for them. No time frame specified other than 'coming soon'.

There`s an ITE Lite programming board for the Vertyanov programmers with pads for BGA`s , no sockets though ,and nothing for ENE chips. Ive seen some sockets for high end programmers but theyre hundreds of dollars each

The board is not developed for ENE

I'm going to order this chip and we'll see what happens.

Based on what I've heard, as long as the ENE chip is 1) blank and 2) a BGA Super I/O, it receives programming from the BIOS chip.

Probably be a month or so before it gets here but I'll update when I get it replaced. I have to do the exact same job on an ASUS G14, so same concept and hopefully same fix.

Between the time of me originally making this thread and now, I've been waiting to receive the correct charger to confirm the Super I/O is at fault. I don't get a short on the capacitor surrounding the Super I/O, but I'll plug it in later today and if the 3.3v/5v regulator gets hot, then we know our Super I/O is faulty.

No shorts are present on the main power rail or any of the secondary power rails (1.8v, 3.3v, 5v), and the CPU and GPU coils are measuring healthy resistance. Plugging the laptop in to the charger should be safe.

Re: MSI GE76 Raider 11UH Super I/O replacement

So I plugged in the power into the DC jack on the motherboard and measured voltages.

Our main power rail is present at the current sense resistor with the correct voltage, however the 3.3v and 5v power rails are missing their voltages with no shorts on the coils.

To check that the 3.3v and 5v are being generated, I went to the TPS51285B IC and measured Pin #3 (3.3v) and Pin #13 (5v). Those two pins are generating the correct voltages so we know that the IC is putting out the 3.3v and 5v so seemingly the chip is good.

Under a thermal camera, the 3.3v/5v converter gets warm (100F), and the Super I/O has one corner where it reaches 140F.

No components around the Super I/O are shorted however, but the one corner heating up leads me to believe that the SIO is partially shorted.

This is a really strange case of a startup chip needing replacement because I've always been able to measure a short around the chip.

Can you link where you got your chip from?

It's entirely possible that your main BIOS chip had a bad flash and is bricked (this can cause fans to spin but no video).
If you manually flash the BIOS chip with a fresh firmware it might work.

That's the exact same one that I got. I received it and the first thing I noticed was that the font was different compared to the original chip. When I asked the seller about it, they said that it was because of manufacturing and that the chip was genuine and would work.

Unfortunately I totally botched the install of the chip and now have to wait for another one. I'll just have to see if it works.
