HP Zbook 15U G6 battery TT03XL 933322-855 (External Charge)

I have an issue with the charging section of the said Laptop (another thread) and I can only operate the laptop with the battery.

But once the battery is discharged the Laptop is not switching on nor is charged.

Problem is investigated

Now the question is:

1. if there is a way to charge the battery outside the Laptop (Externally) with a standard charger/power supply. (not recommended) but I have to try so as to operate the Laptop and get the data.

Connector is coming with 8 cables (three red, three black and two intermediate blue yellow)

2. What is the Voltage i have to supply (black cable are in Parallel, red cables are in parallel)

Attached the details from the schematical diagram of the motherboard which I managed to find/bought

Any help will be highly appreciated

Hi.

1) do post the schematic in the schematic forum and link it here. It will assist future techs.

2) does the laptop function normally with only the power adapter? Does the laptop power up if both the adapter and battery are connected?

3) a dedicated battery charger tool is often used to charge the battery pack. There is a popular one out of Romania but may not be practical to purchase for this single laptop repair.

4) the raised fault is often linked to a leaky mosfet. Likely you will see 2*DCin mosfets in the power path. The 2nd DCin mosfet is a suspect. Post the details of the above questions to move forward. Do note if there is any liquid damage or other faults with the board.

Thanks @SMDFlea.

Attach the power adapter only. No battery.

Carefully measure the voltage to ground of each pin of the mosfet at Q60003. Under this case, this mosfet should pass the power adapter voltage rail forward onto the main logic board rail.

Battery is disconnected and I have taken various measurements starting from the connector.

Please see the attached drawings where I have put inside the red boxes the figures I have measured

I cannot identify if anything wrong. Your further support/advice is kindly required

Furthermore may I ask you to give me some more details for the company in Romania for dedicated chargers for Battery packs?

Answers as following:

1. Already done by SMDflea and link modified

2a. Laptop operates normally only with battery. If battery flat laptop cannot power up.
2b. Power adapter connected (3.5 connector) no charging led lights, No charging of the battery, no power on of the laptop when battery flat
2c. Power adapter connected (USB-C type). same behavior as above. Laptop dead when battery flat
3. Have searched/googled and found NIP EMBEDDED. If this the case. it is true that for one Battery charge it does not worth. Furthermore it does not provide an 8 pin adapter (that particular battery is having 8 pins connector). If anything else available or any patent with standard bench power supplies charging, will be highly appreciated.
4. No liquid damage. Just suddenly failed to charge without any obvious reason. I have posted the measurements as per your second post.

In the end, they are applying a dedicated charger IC like the BQ series in an enclosure to perform the same task. The 8 pins are common contacts and still will feature:

B+
Ground
Smbus lines (SCL and SDA)

There is an option you can consider and that is the BQ development tool or clone from AliExpress. That tool with the software from Texas Instruments will allow you to debug and interact with the charger IC that will be similar to the logic board charger. You will need to interface the contacts on the battery pack with flat copper pads which is more of a challenge. Again, this is a USB to smbus + charger IC tool but compatible with the Texas Instruments software.

Personally have not tested the above but this is a good start. This is a compatible USB to smbus bridge that works with the Texas Instruments software, they claim. Next you will need a bq based charger board and a power supply to mimic the circuit on your logic board.

Then connect your battery to the BQ development board to use.

Comments: will check on the public options for this batch of tools. If not available, will consider to design one for the community. We invested some time into this early on but had a lab crash by a drunk driver so our building is in a state of chaos. Still rebuilding the facility. If there is a need, can design a pcb to support this task. Essentially an affordable BQ like EVM to support battery charging.

Thanks alot. I will be studying and proceed accordingly. Of course this is not an immediate solution, but it will improve knowledge in the laptops battery management system.

I might proceed with the aliexperss items, but it takes a hell of a lot of time to reach Greece

I will concentrate (subject to your and forums assistance) in repairing the board (subject also to spares availability).

May I ask you to look into the measurement I have done in the 2nd DC in mosfet (in case you identify anything wrong.

That is really very interesting. It might explain to me why a DELL battery which I have rebuild a couple if years back was not successful and why I could not charge it.

I have to dig in the old stuff and test it.

Did you have the chance to check the attachments where I have marked in Red Boxes the values (volts) that I have measured?

Further troubleshooting/guidance form your side will be highly appreciated.

The DC jack measurements look to be ok to me. One is the main adapter feed and the other is an analog voltage used to gauge the power rating of the mated adapter. The EC controller (8051 based) will sample this voltage using an Analog to Digital port to determine the specs of the adapter.

With extreme care, can you measure the voltage to ground of the ACOK (pin 24) pin on the charger IC? This is the final status of the power adapter being used. If it is a logic '1' = ~3v3 then the adapter is accepted as being OK to power this logic board.

I will measure and revert

BUT

I have checked with two different Power adapters

and

with an HP USB adapter (since this USB port can be used to charge the Laptop)

Same Behavior with all 3 adapters no orange LED lights on

Furthermore when battery was having some power (before it run flat) and I have run the battery /power test from the BIOS, it was saying that no power adapter is connected.

Finally please confirm that measurement sent for DCIn FET were OK

What is the voltage to ground of VRAVDD (pin 18) on the charger IC area?

This is the voltage required to power the charger IC.
