Dell Latitude D630 random resets

Ok, this is annoying.

my laptop keeps resetting whenever I am trying to read or write a file in a folder of libreoffice spreadsheets

I am running fedora 16 beta.

It happened all of the sudden, it has happened 3 times in my college class within 10 min.

I recently Upgraded my battery to a rayovac made 9 cell unit from battieries plus. According to HW monitor (in vista), it uses sony cells. the battery was around 30% and discharging when it happens

What happens the laptop will all of the sudden power off hard (complete power loss). after removing and reinstalling the battery, the laptop powers up.

I doubt it is relavent, but my laptop uses an nvidia graphics chip.

This is very bizzare... Any Ideas/suggestions?

Rayovac=crap. Batteries plus=overpriced. I would just get s cheapo battery from eBay and return the rayovac.

I'd rather strap c4 to my laptop then use china trash batteries... compared to most places, the prices were not bad for name brand... my understanding was that rayovac was a good brand... heck, it uses sony cells...

can you back up your proof that rayovac is bad quality?

UPDATES:

it did it again when I tried to copy something with 10% charge....

connected to battery power, the problems are gone.

me thinks it is a miscalibrated battery gauge.

I am really thinking it was a calibration issue... I just remembered noting that the battery data last noight read that the battery had more capacity when full than it was designed for... that could indicate a calibration issue, right?

also, if it is a calibration issue, running more full charge/discharge cycles will recalibrate the battery?

also, I made a typo in post 1. it actually was around 10% when it went goofy...

How do I tell which brand the cells in a battery are?

And am I correct that all the batteries that were recalled several years ago that where at risk of fire, we're using Sony cells?...

it was an honest error... the cells are new and safe. In fact, minus the recalled ones, sony cells are some of the best ones available. trust me, if this one were recalled, it would not be on the shelf (IIRC the batteries plus/rayovac partnership happened after the recall).

want to know how to tell? for windows, It is in the battery properties. for linux (fedora 16), well:

I spent 10 minutes trying to find battery properties on my computer...only to realize that I'm using a desktop PC...

A bit off topic, but what's wrong with using generic cheapo eBay battieries? It can't be any worse than Rayovac?

many things:

-bad cell quality (been there, done that)
-poor battery capacity
-poor physical fit
-here today, gone tomorrow sellers (warranty is worth less than toilet paper)
-likely to catch fire, with no hopes of a recall (i know someone who had a noname ipod battery explode)

rayovac:

-known name brand
- 1yr warranty, at a physical store that is a chain
- high quality, sony made cells
- low chance of explosions/fire (too new to use recalled cells).

every brand is capable of sending out the occasional dud.


think of it this way- if generic chinatown PSU's are junk, why not the batteries? noname junk always involves cutting corners. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

actually, kc8adu did in anoyher thread... he says the same thing i was thinking- exchange it, and if #2 is bad, return it for a refund.

they asked what went wrong, that was it. they gave me the other battery they had in stock. No problems (they will probably test the one I gave back and go from there).
