Toshiba Satellite C855 Hannstar-e89382 Component identification

    Dear expert community,

I need your help with identifying some components on a Toshiba Satellite C855 Hannstar-e89382 motherboard, since there are no element markings on this board. The schematics are included.

I don't know the history of this laptop, but by the looks of it, I would say it was run over by a train (cracked LCD, bent LCD hinges, bent keyboard, broken plastic casing, liquid damaged keyboard,...)

Since the LCD is broken, I would like to test this board with external LCD monitor via VGA or HDMI port, but as lucky as I am, this board is missing some components(components later recovered from the casing) near the mentioned ports, every other areas of the motherboard look undamaged.

    1. six legged IC near the VGA port (picture #1)
IC was later found with bent legs and soldered back to it's place (not sure if it's working). Only markings on it are DP.

    Measurements:
None of the six pads is connected to GND
    PIN #1 3.35V
    PIN #2 3.35V (connected to pin #5)
PIN #3 is connected to VGA port pin #15 DDCCLK_1 (5.13V when no external monitor is connected and 4.68V with monitor connected)
PIN #4 is connected to VGA port pin #12 DDCDAT 1 (5.13V when no external monitor is connected and 4.68V with monitor connected)
    PIN #5 3.35V (connected to pin #2)
    PIN #6 3.35V

When comparing this to the schematics I cant seem to find 6pin IC connected to DDCCLK_1 and DDCDAT 1, only 16pin IC U36 CM2009-02QR (picture #2).

    2. 2x unmarked components near the HDMI port
inside red circle on picture #3, they look the same as the two components on the left.
Components were later recovered inside the casing, picture #4, but look damaged and would like to replace them from some scrap board. They look like some kind of inductors.

The current consumption of this board is 0.01-0.65-0.93-0.82A when turned on, with B960 CPU and 1x 2GB PC3-12800 DDR3 RAM. After a minute the board turns itself of.

I have quite a few scrap boards and would scavage them for the missing components if I knew the markings.

    Thank you in advance.

Dear kotnatan thank you for your reply,

I have attached picture of the code from the motherboard.
It says PLF / PLR / CSF / CSR UMA MB REV 2.1 and there is also a code E89382

Re: Toshiba Satellite C855 Hannstar-e89382 Component identification

I believe I have found the component number 1 by searching all the Toshiba schematics at my disposal for the 6 pin IC connected to VGA connector by DDCDAT 1 and DDCCLK_1.
I have found it in schematics for Toshiba C660, picture is attached to this post, the component code is 2N7002DWT/R7 it is a DUAL N-CHANNEL ENHANCEMENT MODE MOSFET. I have also included the datasheet for this mosfet.

        Measurements (Corrected):
None of the six pads is connected to GND
        PIN #1 3.35V
        PIN #2 3.35V (connected to pin #5)
PIN #3 is connected to VGA port pin #15 DDCCLK_1 (5.13V when no external monitor is connected and 4.68V with monitor connected)
        PIN #4 3.35V
        PIN #5 3.35V (connected to pin #2)
PIN #6 is connected to VGA port pin #12 DDCDAT 1 (5.13V when no external monitor is connected and 4.68V with monitor connected)

How do I test this mosfet, and could it be responsible for no picture on VGA port?

Do you have picture on hdmi or internal !
i have here 6 identical mobos, i was never been able to repair one, tried reball, change kbc, bios, reflow, .... those series are a nightmare !

Re: Toshiba Satellite C855 Hannstar-e89382 Component identification

Dear passete thank you for your reply,

I can't try internal LCD because it is damaged and HDMI is missing two elements in it's circuit.

Have you tried replacing the PCH for a new one, not just reballing it?

Yeah it is a pain to diagnose, since it doesn't even start without CPU attached, so I can't measure the PWRGOOD and CPURST signals on it...and elements have no markings on them...

5 of the 6 mobos can boot and even detect external/internal keyboard and mouse, but all give a black screen.
I'm keeping the mobos for later, when i will get some time i will try the replace also the gpu like sugested for some people here.
              Good luck buddy

On the HDMI these missing components are Filters, you need to put other Filters !!

tata123 thank you for your reply.

If I don't use HDMI I don't need to replace those filters, motherboard should show picture through the VGA port anyway, is that correct?

                        UPDATE:

I have made other measurements on this board (especially LVDS signals on LCD connector, all over 1V) and it seemed everything was in order, but it didn't output video via VGA. I did some research and found out the LCD for this motherboard is the same as the LCD in HP Compaq 615, I have at my disposal. I took LCD connector from Toshiba and connected it to HP Compaq 615 screen, started the motherboard and the thing showed video on the monitor.

Later I discovered in BIOS video output device or something similar, only internal LCD is listed, no VGA or HDMI, even when external LCD monitor is connected. When the laptop is in Windows and the correct Intel Graphics driver is installed, It outputs to external monitor via VGA without a problem, if Cloned display is selected in graphic settings.

So if anyone is having the same problem with no video over VGA port, try connecting the internal LCD to the board.
I have assembled the list of compatible screens for this motherboard:

                          UPDATE #2:

I have replaced the two missing filter inductors near the HDMI port, with WCM-2012-900T from Toshiba L450D scrap board, and HDMI is now working without a problem.
