    UPS shorts out

My dad got two free UPS from work, one works fine the other doesn't. It trips its internal breaker as soon as I plug it in. I see nothing wrong with the board, can't find anything wrong. My dad plugged it in with the board disconnected, and it didn't trip. when he plugged the transformer into the board it blows. Not sure if its a problem with the transformer or something on the board. Any help would be great.

    looks like a best power.
look to a welded relay or bad mov's.
those units work well with an external deep cycle battery too.

      Re: UPS shorts out

how do you test if the mov's are bad, I know they're the red epoxy coated things.
so the relay should be closed not open

        Re: UPS shorts out

Desolder the MOVs and measure the resistance between them. If you get readings near zero ohms, they are shorted and need to be replaced with units of the same type.

          Re: UPS shorts out

thank you Mr. Ham and Japlytic, because I hate to have to pitch it if its just a bad relay or mov. I did a continuity test and none made it beep, but it might be different with more voltage.

pull the mov's and try again.
that relay looks odd in the pic.

Dust cap on relay can be popped off for closer look.
Board itself looks like it may have been wet?

I don't think it has ever been wet, and the relay still moves.
Put a piece of paper between the contacts, pugged it in and it didn't blow, so its definitely something on the board and most likly an mov

                    Re: UPS shorts out

Did you try the batteries from the good unit in it first?

If they do work, and the other batteries are bad, you can usually get SLA batteries (typically used in alarm systems) of the same phsical dimensions and voltage for it.

If the unit has two batteries in series, fully charge each 12V battery individually before installing them in the UPS.

My Dad checked the batteries, he tried a car battery charger and they still wouldn't come up past 7 volts each. It is still good for parts and stuff
It was refurbished in 03 but the case was made in 94. RIP 06

3 years is about right for replacement of batteries. i guess they changed them then.

                              Problem

This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached....

                              hi,
i've being using this Cello tv, uk brand, C40rts, HK.T.RT2841P638 main board, for a year or more.
Last week i've found an update, 3rd party, that i though it was close to my board. Inserted on a usb stick the install.img, started the Firmware update, ended, rebooted and nothing. The led (red-green) keeps flashing, backlight is on but to response on remote.
I've retried with original fw, no success. Hooked the uart Cp2102, putty, tried to swuu command (to update from usb), it goes for a while the get "cpu reset" on laptop screen that brakes the process and halt....

Hi, this is my personal laptop, which the original board (lets call it Board A) blew up PU8700 (TPS51486), making a hole on the board, i had left the laptop at my desk one day with the battery fully charged and didn't touch it for a week, but when i tried to turn it on it didn't
Thought the battery was dead, so i plugged in the charger then tried to power on, the power LED blinked once, charged LED still orange, unplugged the charger, plugged in again and I noticed the "magic smoke" smell, so i unplugged the charger, removed the back cover and saw the blown IC (the "magic...

I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

                              Assuming...

                              Hello!

I'm looking at an original Xbox PSU: Foxlink ftps-0002 rev. B. The 12 V output is too low, and the 5 V output is too (?) high. Unfortunately I don't have an oscilloscope but only a DMM for diagnosis.

                              Measured voltages with no load:

                              After rectifier diodes
                              12V: 6.17 V
                              5V: 5.67 V

Secondary transformer pins AC measurement (really don't know if this says anything)
                              12V: 2-2.5 V
                              5V: 1.04 V

I also have another (working) Xbox psu from Delta. The same measures there, in order, being: 10.79,...
