Samsung 50 inch plasma keeps blowing a fuse

    Hi guys,
I picked up a 50 inch plasma tv at the local goodwill store for a couple of bucks about 2 months ago. the guys there were using it for a table, and I guess I just felt sorry for them or something, because I really did not want it. The finally talked me into buying it for a couple of dollars, and I added it to my growing collection of dead/sick flat-screens.
It should have been a give away that the tv came with a package of 3 fuses taped to the back of it, that something major was wrong with it.

I took it apart, and found that the main line fuse (fe802) which is a 12 amp slow blo was dead. I replaced it with one from the bag of fuses, and the set worked fine for a couple of days, beautiful picture, so I put it back together. A fellow came along and wanted the set, so I sold it to him with a 30 day gaurentee. Long story short, I got the tv back last night after refunding the guy's money. It has quit twice since I sold it to him, and I don't do business that way.

Fe802 ( and fe801) is rated at 12 amps, both being line fuses, but only fe802 has the problem. It actually melts the lead out of the fuse. It doesn't seem to blow, just melt the lead. I put an amp clamp on the main line and it is pulling 4.9 amps running off the air signal. last night I put in a 6.3 amp slow blo fuse robbed from an old power supply, and it played in the shop all evening????? this is crazy, can anyone shed some light on what is going on. When it came back in the first time, I replaced the main dc caps with 390uf 450 volt, (original was 330 uf at 450 volt...bigger is better, I think??)
this thing seems to have been made for fans, as there are 4 plugs on the power board marked fan, and look like computer fan plugs, even though it came with no fans onboard. I t gets really hot around the back, and I think maybe that is why it melts the lead out of the fuse end caps.
The main board is a danam communications board kdx303849-ac input 100-240 volt-10 amp.
model number is FP-T5084 model code is fpt5084x/xaa type is 5a50p9, 110-120 volt 520 watt. the fuse is a t12ah/250 volt
power board assy code is bn44-00175a 50fhd rev 2.0 20070917
the tv was manufactured nov 2007, but still shows an excellent picture.

I am going to try to post some pictures here of the board showing the fuse locations, caps, etc. thanx in advance guys for any input on this issue.

Re: Samsung 50 inch plasma keeps blowing a fuse

I believe this is a common issue.

You need to replace the fuse with a slow blow type. The inrush current the TV draws pops fuses when the set turns on because it draws a huge current.

If it's melting the fuse holders, then you might have an issue with a poor electrical contact which can cause more current to flow too.

So try cleaning the fuse holder and replacing the fuse using a slow blow type.

      Years ago--I had something similar.

Twas an old Philips G8 set dating from the mid/late 70's, and main input supply fuse would do much the same as the above--It was a fully solid-state set, with a thyristor half-wave 'chopper' type PSU, with a huge choke that always buzzed in that model.

VERY careful examination showed the inside face of the fuse-holder had some kind of brown deposit--not rust--but summit.

I replaced the whole fuse-holder and fitted new fuse of good quality--correct A/S rating--forget the current, 3.15A rings a bell though.....
--Seems the fuse-holder had developed some kind of high-resistance causing heat--that softened the solder of the end-caps, and being an A/S fuse--one with the springs inside, would pull the wire out of the caps.

I wouldn't even bother trying to clean up the original--Just Replace with new, cant take chances with summit like that.....

I've seen this before, replace the fuse holder, If its heated up once it won't hold a fuse properly and just heat up again and melt the fuse.

Interesting, I have a chance to get one of these exact units for cheap. When I google the model number it is showing 2011 firmware and ect. 2007 Plasma that does 1080p 1920x1080?

The panel I am looking at when plugged in just has a red LED illumination and nothing else. I haven't taken a closer look yet but I am going to be following this thread.

            It's Samsung's first 1080p plasma in a small-ish form factor (50")

Cool, I am supposed to go to the sellers house tonight and take a peek at it. I got a 2013 Sammy PDP (no smart stuff) just a simple but very nice picture panel. I haven't even got 100 hours on it yet lol. I had a 55" LED but the backlight bleed was driving me nuts on black scenes.

I wouldn't keep any new Samsung plasma unless it was an F8500 or E7000+...

The one I have looks great, doesn't have that annoying green hue when white transitions quickly on the screen like a lot of PDP's I have seen.

I got it new/open box for 300.00 it supposed to have a bad pixel but I ran the Disney WOW disc with Purity levels and I have yet to find it.

Friend of mine got the top of the line Sammy 64" PDP, looks great and quite too.

                      Hey Guys,
thanx for the input. I had totally forgot what a crappy fuse holder would do in a high current situation. It's a wonder it did not catch on fire or something.

Do any of you guys know if they ever ran fans on these older plasma tv's?
I used to repair tv's back when they were REALLY TOUGH (and HEAVY too!) now that I am getting older and not so muscle bound, it's nice to pick up a set and it only takes a small effort to lift it.

I went and looked up the info on Toms link to his database, and saw this posted there:

                      Hot Item:
Repeated failure of SMPS or 12amp
                      fuse on SMPS.
                      Replace Y main when replacing
SMPS where the 12amp fuse is open.

so it may be more than just a fuse holder, but I will try that first.

thanx again for all the fast replies, this site is the best one I have ever found!

All older Panasonic plasmas typically use fans, they offered a free 5 yr warranty though. Most of their newer sets in 1080p do too. In general Samsung and LG only use fans very occasionally in their plasma models - older ones only.

The 5084 I got lastnight ended up having lines down the top in the middle to the middle of the panel. It turns on and everything works I tried all the inputs ect and it played just had an ugly void of picture.

I tapped on the back of the shell and the lines would change and then it actually displayed an image in the voided area then it went back to void again. The panel according to the service menu has almost 8000 hours.

So I might have a ton of spare parts soon

For that issue it either a loose cable on the x drivers to that address buffer or some bad solder joints on the resistors on the x driver boards, easy repair, and it is probably curable.
Did I leave the soldering iron on?

Think so? I was always under the impression that vertical lines = bad panel due to ribbon cable IC failure.
