I've had the Vizio M492I-B2 since February 2015. It's been a good TV set (not to mention the apparent unicorn that has more than 3 HDMI ports) since then...until yesterday morning. I'm up, having my coffee, working my way down a YouTube rabbit hole when I hear a POP sound and lose both picture and sound.
Initially, I thought I lost power. Modem/router lights still on disproved that immediately. I thought I'd try both the Roku remote and the original Vizio remote--no dice. I attempted to manually power on the unit--nada. I decided to unplug, wait 30 seconds, and replug. While I was waiting to replug, I noticed the smell of something burnt. Not good, I thought. I decided to go through a full hard reset--unplug, hold power down, replug--and nothing happened. Standby light doesn't even flicker. Only thing that I sensed was the smell of burnt plastic.
I crossed some things off my list, including the flashlight test to see if an inverter was an issue. I checked the screen as best I could, and I don't think that whatever the pop was caused any damage. The Internet--which of course is always 100% true and never has any false information whatsoever --tells me this is the Vizio Pop of Death.
My wife and I had been talking about upgrading the TV anyway, so we took this as a sign to do so. But I'm thinking I'll be able to repair this one and wall mount it in a separate room. Based on lots of reading--including help from this forum post--I'm thinking I should try to replace the power supply first. Rather than pore over each component to see what needs to be replaced, I think I'll be in and out quicker with a board swap.
Hat tip to the original post on this model, and to this forum in general. If anyone has any tips for board replacement, I'd gladly welcome them. It looks simple enough--some screws and pin connections--but anything I think is simple is usually trickier than I initially estimate.
