So I'll start things off :

My name is petabyte and I'm a forum junkie. I've been off the wagon for a number of years and countless times I've tried to stop but it's useless.. I need to feed my learning addiction.. :!:

Now just a bit about me.. I'm a fairly secretive guy in terms of privacy on the net.. especially when the things you write are visable to anyone with a net connection. But I love to share the info and knowledge I have, so that's why I'm here, to share and learn.

my formal education is that of an electronic engineer and I held a field service position with a firm for over 20 years.. that job is gone now along with company car and laptop <cry> oh well..
So needless to say (but i will) I've always tinkered with things.. yes, a hacker.. (too bad that term lost it's orignal meaning) a hardware hacker mostly.. hacking fixes in whatever I find that breaks.. (except for cars, I have friends for that) I got started a little late into the computers, my first box was an ibm pc-xt with a whopping 10meg HD,blazing fast 4.66mhz 8086 processor, 640k mem running dos 3.3.. man was I cool back then.. nevermind..

so these days, I'm forced to be a software guy as well.. as I fix pc's for friends and that usually means cleaning virus/trojan/adware and reinstalling OS's.. yeah hardware breaks but not that often  so as a result, I keep up on my software knowledge by visting a few security forums.. and trolling around a few hardware forums as well.

now I found this place from a thread at motherboards.org/forums
where I've been hanging out lately.. it's a nice friendly place with some pretty smart people.. mostly, of course, it's about mobo's.. So this person mentioned badcaps.net and I recalled reading articles a year or so ago about the faulty caps and was curious as to what you guys were up to.. and I said \"w00t.. they have a forum\"..

and so now.. you're stuck with me :P

so what's your story ? come on.. give it up..

Re: New Members - please post your introductions here

Can anyone help please? I have a LG 50" Plasma TV, model No. 50PJ550, the fault I need to solve is when it is first turned on it is badly blurred for a few seconds, then it settles to a reasonable good picture but there is a black patches on the top third of the screen, they tend to dissolve just like fluffy white clouds do when the sun warms them, but each time the scene changes they reappear again. When the picture scene is light the dark black patches seem to less noticeable. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, my name is Derek live in Canada (ex UK). Just found this interesting site while searching for troubleshooting info on an HP 1740 monitor. I am a retired teacher but also have an electronics tech qualification. At present I am using my self-built computer runing Ubuntu 12.04 and Win7.
My monitor still works OK but none of the controls are active - not sure why - maybe a software issue.
Recently my gas furnace failed and I found that it was a bad cap in the motor - felt great that I could have fixed it but it was still under warranty. Back soon ..

a/k/a Glenn... Sporadic lurker here due to infection with Shuttle SN68SG2... quick-fixed it once, now caps done it again.

Not counting the Motorola 6800 kit in school, first PC was an XT with a 10 MHz CPU, 8087 math co-proc, probably 512 K of RAM, with a 10 MB HDD and TWO 5.25" floppies, all for the low, low price of just under $3000... well, including the 13" amber monitor.

Posting this from an old Acer 5420 that has been dropped >>30 times, last time tore a USB port off the main board, had it apart at least six times to fix, will not die. <crosses fingers>

Anyway, time to fix the Shuttle again - IIRC, there was once a kit available for the FN68S mobo - could one be put together again? Or at least a listing of the caps necessary to do the job right, instead of the way I did it a couple years ago? :-/

                                      Hello,

I am a high school teacher in Sacramento, California. I picked up an old LCD TV off of Craigs List to display student work in the hallway, but the picture fades out on start up. I replaced the capacitors with an online kit, but to no avail, so I am joining this forum in hopes of discovering a fix for the TV.

Hi!, I'm from Italy. I have found your forum while I was looking information about repairing my poor monitor Samsung SyncMaster920N. Thanks to the information found here, I have substituted the capacitors with the correct replacements, and the monitor is working like new (and I'm using it just now). Thanks again.

I like fixing broken things instead of buying new ones. Clothes, cars, computers or chairs. If it's already broken there's nothing to loose.
