Re: Samsung 244T
I am currently working on a Samsung 244T for my brother.
As you already know, ALL the CapXon caps have to be replaced. Even the 450v. It failed without bulging. I took it out to test out of circuit for the heck of it... bad. Don't assume that one is good. Go ahead and replace that one too.
Testing done with a ESR-micro v3.1 I bought some time ago.

Re: error 30.01.18 HP 4100 MFP power supply
Here is a useless update:
After it told me the toner was low, it started behaving correctly. I replaced the toner cartridge with a genuine HP cartridge. Still works with no errors and goes to sleep. All seems well.
So maybe the voltage was the problem and the off-brand low toner made it worse...... ???
I fixed the voltage prob and the rest eventually worked itself out?
I don't know anything. I learned a tiny bit. The "universe" won and I was just along for the ride.
Thanks...

Re: error 30.01.18 HP 4100 MFP power supply
Well. After much poking around and identifying and looking at some data sheets and tracing some things out and measuring ....
All the usual suspects (caps and solder joints (a few touch-ups)) are fine.
12 v has a voltage reg. 5 v has it's own regulator. 3.3 volts is derived by pwm from a K2736 N channel MOS FET driven by a MB3759 Control IC through a A1015 Low-Frequency Amplifier PNP General Purpose Transistor.
In the printer's old age, something drifted resulting in the 3.3 v line going to 3.48 v...

error 30.01.18 HP 4100 MFP power supply
My HP 4100 MFP (4101mfp multi-function-printer with duplexer) has been giving a 30.01.18 error code. It will function as a printer just fine but I can't use it as a copier/scanner because of the code. Service manuals say to replace the scanner board but I read in a couple other forums that it is actually the power supply that causes the problem. The 3.3 volt output is reading 3.4v and apparently that's just out of spec to cause an error. The error also keeps the whole printer from powering down to low-power stand-by mode. After a power cycle and cool-down period, scanning/copying works for a while...Last edited by golemmaster; 05-22-2016, 03:12 PM.

Re: Solder Question
I prefer 2%+ silver solder. Are there any reasons or conditions in which I should never use silver solder?
My reasons are that 2%Silver seems to solidify into a harder, stiffer more resilient connection. And the silver content may help reduce the internal resistance of a solder connection and may resist oxidation better. Is this wrong? Am I dreaming? :P

Re: replacement battery suggestions
I am NOT please with Rayovac or Batteries plus.
Batplus is too expensive and Rayovac are only good for very low current application like TV remote just cuz they're cheap. One experience; I bought Rayovac cell phone batteries from Batplus. Within 8 months I when back to my original 3 year old Samsung Made in Japan Li-ion battery. It is old but it holds charge longer than that new Rayovac. Even 3 years after that. So the original battery is 6 years old and I'm still using it!

Re: Sony VGN-FS980: broken joint or BGA?
Just FYI....
FixMyGPU.com and FixMyGPU on youtube.
Interesting vids to watch and pretty good prices on the service.
He does full reball only. Not reflows.

Re: Sony VGN-FS980: broken joint or BGA?
I remembered the 217-230c info after I posted. :/
I don't have the equipment to try either repair right now.
Well crud. I'll keep thinking about it.
I'm not perfectly certain that its a BGA problem. But I guess the odds are it is.Last edited by golemmaster; 12-26-2011, 05:56 PM.

Re: Sony VGN-FS980: broken joint or BGA?
Yes. Bending the board. Power light lights-up. No POST or boot unless I bend the board a certain way.
I have the board out of the laptop. I have my fingers on either side of the board and chips. If I press directly (squeezing / pinching toward the board) any of the BGA chips, it doesn't help. Only bending the board does the trick.
Fixing this laptop is an experiment and a "feel good" project. I shouldn't be worried about breaking it completely, but it looks so promising. I would definitely feel bad if I destroyed...

Sony VGN-FS980: broken joint or BGA?
I have a Sony VGN-FS980. It has been sitting in a box for a couple years. A "one of these days / when I have time" box. Well, I have some time now.
It won't POST. I have found that if I flex the board in just the right way, it will POST and boot. I thought I had found the area that seems to need the flexing but it is still difficult to get perfectly consistent results. During my experiments, the board needs more and harder flexing to get it to respond. The problem is getting worse. I somewhat expected that. I've prodded and pressed down on all the parts hoping it was just a smd...

Re: AcBel 9841 problems
Hi!
... the surface mount caps, you say.... Hmmm...
I replaced the small electrolytic caps but hadn't considered the little ceramic SMDs going out of spec.
Any idea what their values are supposed to be?
THANKS!Last edited by golemmaster; 08-05-2011, 06:52 PM.

Re: AcBel 9841 problems
Correct: 28vsb present, switch on hiss and shut off, 28vsb still present uninterrupted by the switch or hiss.
I've replaced those caps twice with other brands despite ESR looking ok on the NTEs. The TEAPOs measure 0.00 - 0.01 ESR and correct capacitance with the ESR-micro 3.1.
Would something wrong with the powergood/poweron section cause this and how to track that down?
I'm confused and getting tired but I don't want to give up because you can't buy this PS without it costing an arm and a leg or without the uncertainty of...Last edited by golemmaster; 07-01-2011, 02:33 PM.

There is no 5vsb that I see. Not listed on the label either.

I notice the 28v standby is always on even when it hisses and shuts off.

Re: AcBel 9841 problems
The 1000uF 6.3v Rubycon YXF measures 948uF 0.08ESR. That's OK, right?
The two caps are new Nichicon HE. The other one is a new NTE. (I know. I know.)
The more I messed with it and turn it on and off, the shorter it stays on.
It won't stay on longer than a couple seconds now. It makes the hissing noise and then shuts off. I think the noise is around that heat sink but maybe on the other end of it.
The fact that I seem to have permanent tinnitus makes it even harder to locate the noise.

Re: AcBel 9841 problems
Also... When AC is applied, the 28v standby works fine. The sound doesn't occur until I turn on the switch to provide 12,5,3.3 etc
Is it normal for one of the heat sinks to have mains AC on it? Only one of the two support tabs that plug into the board is connected to a circuit of some kind, so it's not used as a bus.
The whine is very high pitched and is difficult to locate but I think it's coming from the area of the smaller transformer, or the nearby 2SK2765 mosfet, or something else nearby. There is a resistor that gets very hot nearby too....
