Re: Dell OptiPlex GX270 - multiple bad cap failures
The only caveat with getting Dell to replace boards is if the board is still functional, especially if you're trying to get it through Warranty Parts Direct. If there is no noticable symptoms (won't POST, crashing, etc) but there are failing caps, Dell makes a stink about it. WPD will ONLY replace boards if there's some kind of failure in the system. If it's working fine, they won't replace it.
It's probably better to call their 800 number & get it replaced through that way. That way you can argue with a tech...

Re: Swollen Rubycon on Dell Optiplex GX270
So from the time that the failed Nichicon 3x 1800uf 16v caps were replaced, it was just a matter of time before that particular Ruby would fail also?
What about boards that never had Nichicons on them at all? I've seen that Ruby next to the AGP fail recently on several boards that had all Ruby's on them when they were brand new from the factory back in 2003, all with 2003 data codes, long before the GX270 bad cap problems was even noticed....Last edited by scarfman; 05-08-2007, 03:11 PM.

Re: Swollen Rubycon on Dell Optiplex GX270
I'd say probably 90% of the Rubys I've seen fail are those ones between the AGP & RAM slots, yes. However I've seen some of the 1800uf 6.3 8mm ones fail on the rare occasion.
Has anyone had any reports of the Panasonic caps that Dell has lately been putting on their replacement boards failing?

Re: Swollen Rubycon on Dell Optiplex GX270
I've seen this frequently. I would always check the caps on GX270 boards for Rubycons & see if they were starting to look smoothed out, meaning they would probably start bulging or leaking within a few months. I always tried to get ones from Dell with Panasonic ones if I could.

Re: Dell OptiPlex GX270 - multiple bad cap failures
Dell is very good about replacing motherboards if they are bulging. I had seven GX270 systems that I purchased on Ebay and four of them had bulging capacitors. I called Dell & they still replaced them anyway. They were all out of warranty, too.

Re: Can Rubycons bulge in normal usage?
Not trying to play devil's advocate, but I don't believe these failing MCZs are related to ones replacing previously failing Nichicons. We've had probably 2 dozen of these in that exact spot fail & many of them were from boards that were never recapped & came with the original purchased system before Dell even started recapping.
Just my $.02 worth.
Also, has anyone seen the Nichicon HN(M) series that are dated after Apr 04 failing? We have a few of these boards that were some of the first...Last edited by scarfman; 12-07-2006, 09:46 AM.

Re: Biostar M7vig 400
Sorry, the other caps say "TK", not "TZ". Either way, I don't know who made them.

Biostar M7vig 400
Hello. I just recently purchased a Biostar M7VIG 400 motherboard to replace a dead AM37 from an EMachines system. The board is brand new & contains some Rubycon MBZ caps, but also has some other caps that have a "TZ" on them that I'm not familiar with, as well as some G-Luxon caps.
I know that G-Luxon has been listed as a bad brand in the past, so do you recommend that I have these caps replaced, even though it's a brand new board? Also does anyone know what this other brand is and whether or not it's a reliable brand?
Any help will be appreciated....

Re: Dell OptiPlex GX270 - multiple bad cap failures
The ones that are also subject for failure are the three 1800uf caps directly behind the parallel ports (they're the ones I've seen the most failures of), the three 1500uf caps: one inbetween the RAM slots and the AGP slot and the other two inbetween the RAM slots and the CPU socket, and the two 1800uf caps right next to the ATX power connector.

Re: The Hall of Shame - Badcaps Photo Montage
If they are, then Dell's vendor would have installed them that way. My theory was that there's two small chips next to this cap (I'm assuming are voltage regulators) that are extremely hot to the touch, enough that they discolor the board over time; I think they are baking those Rubycons....

Re: Dell OptiPlex GX270 - multiple bad cap failures
Does anyone know what that single capacitor between the RAM & AGP slot regulates power for? For example, if it's for the RAM then I can run memory diagnostics to see if it's affecting memory performance.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Re: Emachine Mess
I could use help with this too. Our church had an Emachines system with an AM37 board and the power supply's cap blew. I put in a replacement power supply from Antec that's ATX12V compatible but I can't get the system to boot. I tested the RAM & it's fine in another system. I've tested the CPU (an Athlon XP 2200+) and it works on an ECS board that I borrowed. I found a replacement AM37 board on Ebay & it won't boot either.
Any ideas how to get this to work? Either that or a good recommendatation for a replacement board?

Re: Dell OptiPlex GX270 - multiple bad cap failures
Here's something both interesting and annoying. I just found another board that has a cap that is bulging at the top and also at the bottom. Dell refuses to replace it because the board is not showing symptoms of failure. So now I have to monitor the system here in my office until it does show some kind of symptom or starts leaking.
Is this BS or what?

Re: Dell OptiPlex GX270 - multiple bad cap failures
I was wondering if it might be more of a heat issue. If you look on these boards right next to that cap are two small black chips, I'm assuming are voltage regulators. If you touch those chips after the system has been running for a few minutes they are very hot. I've even seen many boards where the surrounding area around those two chips is discolored (kind of a yellowish or orangish tinge) instead of the normal green.
Any ideas?

Re: Dell OptiPlex GX270 - multiple bad cap failures
The ones I'm referring to usually have only Rubycons on them. The last 4 that I've replaced were ones that Dell had already replaced the faulty Nichicons with. I think the faulty Rubycons though are dated around 0331 (latter half of 2003)....

Re: Dell OptiPlex GX270 - multiple bad cap failures
I know that the Optiplex GX270 boards had Nichicon caps that were bad, but has anyone seen Rubycons fail on this board? I've seen five boards now that have a Rubycon cap inbetween the RAM slot and the AGP slot that will either bulge or leak.
Has anyone else encountered these Rubycons with this problem?
