I've gotten lucky with my amateur repairs to a few DVD players and motherboards, but those always involved obviously-failed capacitors with easy-to-read voltage and uF ratings. I'm now trying to help out a buddy with his Samsung 2570HD, which looks to have the same failure as the original post in this thread.
So far I've replaced the TM-08171 inverter coil, which was obviously failed (one third of the coil underneath was a charcoal-black color when it was removed). Now, while the monitor displays a picture, it makes an irregular buzzing noise and...

Howdy. I have had good luck repairing my own electronic devices over the years, mostly by opening them up and looking for the components that are obviously distressed and need replacing. However, I'm a rank amateur with no training in electronics whatsoever, and I am hoping to learn a bit more about what I'm doing by spending some time here.
