Dell (Huntkey) PSU randomly shuts off/won't power on.
Hi guys, been awhile since I've posted here but currently I'm at a loss. I have a Dell Dell 6GXM0 / Hunkey HU460AM-00. It has all crap branded caps but none are bad. Large output coil is getting very, very hot. All caps test OK with good ESR. Where should I go from here? Thanks guys. I'll have pictures uploaded in a moment....Last edited by jazzie366; 02-18-2019, 11:36 AM.

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1
Free 24k btu, 220v ac with the remote and all working perfectly. The power cord is 12 gauge, absolutely mad.
Edit: Oh yeah, it's filthy because it was in a shed for awhile, stored right side up so compressor is all good. Also, as an hvac tech, you can just flip the compressor over and leave it there for 4 hours, it will be fine after that if it's been accidentally stored incorrectly. Now you know....Last edited by jazzie366; 05-21-2018, 07:14 PM.

Re: Sabine Graphi-Q Holy Shorts, Batman!
Update: There was a confession to why it failed. It was sandwiched between two power amps, pure class A, audiophile grade with tubes inside. It was subjected to the 180F heat of both for days on end.
Also, removing the two 3300's made all the chips in the area stop getting hot. HOWEVER, another problem has arisen. The PSU voltage is too low, the regulator is only putting out 4.5V, when the chips need a minimum of 4.75 to turn on, go figure. Well, I'm going to replace the voltage regulator, as there's not much...

Re: Sabine Graphi-Q Holy Shorts, Batman!
Nope. It was in service years ago and stopped working. My dad is an audio engineer and was using it in his studio. Literally the thing quit while it was being used, Sabine wanted 500$ just to look at it without repair. Fuck that.
A bunch of chips have failed short and one capacitor has as well, all on the analog power rail. Very weird, going to replace all of them and see if that fixes it. If so, it'll be a nice piece of kit to have working again.
Also, the power that goes into ALL of his sensitive...

Re: Sabine Graphi-Q Holy Shorts, Batman!
Removed them just now. Thing powers on, except C24 has gone up in smoke. No idea the value at all. Lit up red hot and then went out as the output relays click on. I checked the cap on the other chip for the one that fried, C31, and it measured 5uF. So probably something in the region of 6.3v 4.7uF.
Not sure where to go from here other than replace that cap with a 4.7uF cap and put a new set of chips in.
Edit: The Dual op amps still are getting up to 180 degrees. So I assume they are shorted as well....Last edited by jazzie366; 04-30-2018, 06:03 AM.

Sabine Graphi-Q Holy Shorts, Batman!
So my dad has had this Sabine Graphi-Q for years and could never repair it as it's way above his head. Well, I went into it and found two things, the DIGITAL power in rail for the MC3310-KS chips was being dragged from 2.0V to 1.5V. The ANALOG power in rail was being dragged from 5.0V to 0.3V(!). So the chips are shorted. How do I know? Both of them go up to 300 degrees Fahrenheit, after I let them cook for awhile. Plus the inductors on the power rails have melted, not in a way that they're bad, they just have their plastic casings deformed. Still perfectly functional.
High res...

Some Good News: YEC No Longer Makes Electrolytic Capacitors
It is as the title says! They no longer make electrolytic capacitors. Instead, they make supercapacitors. Don't believe me? Visit their website, they pulled their datasheets and don't offer them. http://www.yec.com.tw/products.php
They also have a new logo - check the datasheets to see it.https://It is as the title says! The...e a new logo -

Re: Samsung DLP primaries...in series?
Found Wurth in many an audio circuit. They're good in my book, never seen them fail before. However, in your situation I think it might be alright to get a higher voltage cap, as that can add ripple current handling to it. I know this sounds silly, especially considering what's already there, but it can solve the problem quite easily....

Re: Fixing a Battery Maintainer
No, those are lot codes. G-Luxon brands their caps by putting a two letter combination before the temperature rating. Take the TW series for example, it will look like "TW 105C". You'll find something along those lines on there.
Also, those look to be standard caps, non low ESR, as it's a linear regulator and they can go both ways. Seeing as they are failed without bulging points more towards age killing them, instead of the load/ripple they had to withstand. You can get middle of the road caps (in terms of ESR) that...

Re: OBH Nordica DC adapter
By what you're telling us, the adapter works, then you power it down and it stops working completely again.
I'm not sure what you mean by,
However, I think you mean the zener diode there is shorted? If it is, that's guaranteed to be the issue.

You can get them directly from there, just select the 30V version. Those diodes...

Re: I found the bad cap, looking at replacements
All those caps are fake Chongx or Chengx caps. The print is wrong, there is no series denotation and there is no lot number. They're blatant fakes. I've found fake ChengX/ChongX etc in many power supplies that were branded and UL listed etc. Obviously they were lower end ones, but nonetheless they'll still make it.
The fakes fail a lot sooner than the real ones, Chong and ChongX are spinoffs of the actual caps ChengX and Chang which ChengX being made by Bentex and Chang being made by Yang Chang.

Re: Say you got a free PSU from outside... and it was raining
I got my daily driver PSU outside, and in the rain!
My DD PSU is a Corsair HX750. I know, not something you find every day.
What was wrong with it? Well, it's problems didn't show until 2 years later! I made a post once about it, the damned thing had dry solder joints. The PC hadn't moved much in those 2 years, so I was surprised at there being any problems like that. Looked as if someone had pulled on the non-modular cables this thing has. Needless to say 60W of soldering iron fixed it....

Re: the gutless, bloated, and fried power supply hall of shame
>2 layers of tape between primary and secondary
That tape is 600V insulation rated (from decent brands at least). That means it's got 1000v of isolation. That would fail EU standards so fast due to the fact that 3000v is required. There are better ways of doing this nowadays. I've seen newer transformers from SMPSs like this that would put a plastic/glass isolator on the core of the transformer, tape over that, wind onto that, tape, isolator, tape again, and then the secondary. Feedback...

Re: EcoSmart 5csbr650stq1d03
1k @ 370V-ish from two caps being put in series in a voltage doubler circuit, that'll flow about 250-400mA. That's 100W. That's a very nice spark.
It's either that or my screwdriver :P. I should take a room heater and put a few jumper leads on it, turn it on high and see what happens....

Re: EcoSmart 5csbr650stq1d03
Oh yeah, I have two 560Ohm resistors in series for discharging. Now before you say it, yes, it makes large sparks but I don't have the patience to wait 10 seconds for a cap to decharge (either that or I really like the sparks. Sparks are fun. Sparks.)...

What solder would you recommend for this?
Going to be soldering a joint that needs to flow 80-100A at 12v. Is standard leaded solder good for this?

Re: EcoSmart 5csbr650stq1d03
Oh bah, I didn't give a shit about these LEDs. The lamp was dead and I'm never going to use them again, I smashed the lamps case to get it open. I'm going to try some of those Sylvania bulbs as they are made a bit better.
If I was working on sensitive electronics I would've used a proper PSU with current limiting....
