Re: Repairing bad power supply from Power Mac G4 MDD
It was the D101/102 . The 1N9158 or something close to that.
All of the caps look fine and seem to be within range. They are capxon but the ones I pulled including the big one were right on....

Re: Suspect Bad PS Apple AcBel API 1PC36
This didn't occur to me the first time either but the glue they used hold the 470/680/1000/1000 together helps in getting them out, it will all just fall out as one piece when de soldered.
Also you didn't have to remove the power socket, all you do is remove the 4 screws holding the board, slide it back a bit and then turn it to the side and you have bottom access to the green and blue wire, which desolder very easy.

Re: AT power supply to replace power adapters
I can't think of any issues. As long as the amps are close enough.
I just came from a store that was selling 5V 2A adapters for $1.99.. And if you go to a dollar store or surplus place they often have a bin of 3/5/12 and such adapters for about the same.

Re: Repairing bad power supply from Power Mac G4 MDD
I changed Q1 and Q2 and still popped a fuse. What should this diode be reading? I pulled one and on the 200k setting of the DMM it reads 7.5 going one way and about 150 going opposite.
I'm about to transfer the entire Q1 and Q2 assembly and the two diodes to another board and see if the fuse blows on that as well.

Re: Do main caps go on a GX280 SFF PS
I switched over a set of good 470uf caps and got the same buzzing and growling for one second. I don't think its a cap issue, these wan wien power supplies suck. I tried to jump start it a few times and eventually the 5VSB went away, now I think I have a blown fuse.

Re: Do main caps go on a GX280 SFF PS
Would it be a disaster if I put in a 470uf for a couple of seconds to see if it turns on.

Re: Do main caps go on a GX280 SFF PS
No I don't have spares for those big ones. It is a no name brand. black sleeve and the letter M inside a TV box (M) CE . I bought this brand before in a smaller size and you guys slammed me for it.
I just changed the last 1000uf 10v and still the same 1 second of buzz when I plug it in.

Re: Do main caps go on a GX280 SFF PS
I pulled the mains and both were reading 289 and 290uf on a basic capacitor tester. It should be 330uf so it makes me think they're good.

Re: Do main caps go on a GX280 SFF PS
There is no USFF in a GX280. Not in north america anyway. The separate power brick is a totally different model. I believe gx620 or something.
The power supply just makes a buzz / growl for one second when pressing the power button. I have 5vsb but that is it.

Do main caps go on a GX280 SFF PS
I changed 90% of the caps and it still just makes a growling sound but doesn't start. The main caps look really cheap, I'm wondering if anyone knows if they are a known problem on these.
This is the one with the thinner fan, I always have good success with the other variation which is a lite on, but these ones always just growl for a second after a recap.

Re: what do you use to glue together caps
In some cases it looks like it keep components apart from touching each other. I'll grab some high temp black RTV
Thanks

what do you use to glue together caps
I noticed in some power supplies the caps are glued together and glue to some other components. What do you recommend for this? Is there a brand or something. I didn't want to just pull out the hot glue gun.

Re: Power Mac G4 MDD "Mirror-Door" won't power up
Good stuff ED but I was more concerned about the quality of caps. I put one together with cheap caps and it didn't start and I put another one together that started but only ran for a few hours. With the better quality caps it has been running for a while with no problems.

Can I change aluminum caps with regular
I have an old worthless 128mb video card, I just want to fix it for myself.
Can I change the 470uf silver looking caps with the standard looking ones ?...
