Re: Samsung Syncmaster 245B - Screen freeze -> screen flash 4 diff colours
I cleaned all the cables between the PSU PCB and the video PCB, plus the cable going from the PCB into the LCD panel....
10 days now without a hiccup. Didn't expect that.......

Re: Samsung Syncmaster 245B - Screen freeze -> screen flash 4 diff colours
I previously recapped my 245B and it worked for some time. Now it does exactly as described above.
All caps were replaced with Panasonic FC and the big one was replaced with a Nichicon AR. Resistors were replaced with heavier wattage ones.
There is one Nichicon VZ 470uf 35v near CN801 and a Panasonic NHG 22uf 50v near the infamous 3 resistors
None of the caps look bulged in any way. Is this now failing from wrong series caps?

Re: Ask the Guru's: Removal of Recovery Partition - Vista to Windows 7 upgrade?
That partition is bootable by hitting a qualifier key in the BIOS during bootup.
It will boot up into a customized OS and will wipe and reinstall the laptop back to it's factory condition, including all the original crapware and trialware.
As you have now made the smart move to Windows 7 that partition is not needed anymore.
Typically I just format the existing HD and do a fresh install of Windows 7. In your case I would just remove the recovery partition....

Re: RANT: DVD decoders
K-Lite works. General incompetence of the users installing it is effecting the "failure rate", I bet. Every new machine I build goes out the door with this codec pack as well.
Agree. Never any issue with K-Lite for many years.
VLC and Media Player Classic also work well....

Re: My Viewsonic VX924 monitor died!
Using the DC adapter to give it power via the capacitor nearest the 6 pin connector resulted in the monitor turning on once and then not again.
When I removed the connector it resumed it's normal non-working behaviour.
I did not have the AC plugged in at the same time as the adapter. Is AC needed at the same time?

Re: My Viewsonic VX924 monitor died!
I would like to report that the 12 volts from the PSU is fluctuating.
I would guess that the logic board is OK as the image looks fine for the half second it is up on the screen.
Am I still looking at a capacitor problem?

Sorry for the long delay, I've been working 12 - 15 hour shifts right now. I will measure voltages when I can (soon hopefully). However, I did score a 4.5 amp 12 volt power supply so I can try that as well.Re: My Viewsonic VX924 monitor died!...

...

Re: Thank you...
I have to second this...
To have quick and easy access to brilliant minds for this kind of stuff is invaluable.
Also, from what I see the experts are extremely helpful and patient.
Cheers!

Re: Your Best Dumpster Finds
I found a:
Liebert GXT2 700VA 2U Rackmount single phase on-line UPS
AND! extra 2U optional extended battery cabinet
When first powered on it was screaming unholy hell. Batteries inside the unit were shorted and dead. Swapped new batteries in it and it's currently running fine.
This thing has a double conversion On-Line design and true sine wave output so I'm pretty happy. 700VA is a bit low but it will just be powering a home server that houses 16 2TB HDs - and I don't expect it'll ever pull more...

Re: My Viewsonic VX924 monitor died!
So what should my next step be?
I'm afraid that my soldering is much much better than my troubleshooting skills.
Should I be checking ESR on the replacement caps?

Re: My Viewsonic VX924 monitor died!
Ok, swapped out the 35v 330uF Rubycons for ZL's of the same values.
Then swapped the 50v 10uF Nichicon for a UCC KY of the same.
All caps report correct capacitance according to my Fluke 12, but I have no idea if the ESR is off (No ESR meter here)
The monitor's symptoms are slightly different now. The picture is there, but the backlight comes on.....

Re: My Viewsonic VX924 monitor died!
Okay, I found https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2280
The nichicons and Rubycons I used aren't on that list.
I suppose that is my issue? Which caps are part of the SMPS circuit?Re: My Viewsonic VX924 monitor died!... SMPS circuit?Re: My Viewsonic VX924 monitor died!

Re: My Viewsonic VX924 monitor died!
I replaced the 400v 100uF with a nichicon PT(M)
The (2) 25v 470uF caps by the MBR10100CT are UCC KZE
The (C21) location I put a 35v 330uF Rubycon MHE
Beside the largest cap I placed a nichicon 10uF 50v VZ(M)
Lastly, the cap near the 6 pin connector is another 35v 330uF Rubycon MHE
The values should all be fine or overkill now except I may have messed up and not used low ESR caps where I needed to....
Also, I went through the board and hopefully (maybe I missed a few?)...

Re: My Viewsonic VX924 monitor died!
I have recapped the entire PSU and now the monitor turns on, but only for a second.
It turns on, then turns off about once a second, repeating. The MBR10100 tested fine when I pulled it out.
I have not touched the logic board yet but that is where I was about to head to.... I've read 3 or more threads on this monitor and I'm still not sure what the blinking green power LED means....

Re: Samsung Syncmaster 245BW
Just wanted to let you know that I've had success repairing my monitor.
I replaced every capacitor on the board, simply because it's easy, cost be about $10 and I don't want to fix it twice. However, that didn't fix it.
I checked the three 68 ohm resistors and they were dead, even though they looked perfectly fine. I ordered three metal film 68 ohm 3 Watt (+/- 5% and 750V rating) Vishay resistors and installed them.
After reassembly the monitor turned on without any drama. YAY!
Thank you very...
