Re: Xbox has low 12v, cause?
'Broken' Xbox arrived. Swapped the PSU, which is way heavier and all is fine (11.90v).
It even powers on differently, instead of instantly powering on with a click (as if something is pushed) it now powers on after a delay of 1 second and no noise. Shutting down also takes a bit longer. Even the m/b and gpu temperatures went down from ~50 to ~34 in idle.
I will take all capacitors from the chinese psu and throw it away. Shame to see they're still being sold online.
Now to find a new psu for the 'broken' Xbox...

Re: Xbox has low 12v, cause?
Only the middle pin of those components screwed to the heatsink are NOT connected to it.
At the power cord section heatsink, only one pin is connected to the heatsink. I measured using the pins on the bottom side of the psu.
Good eye, but it was some flux from the solder wire.
True, was in the picture only. I don't see cracks.
I checked them again, did notice something odd but maybe it's normal?
Yellow: 10.73v
Red (x3):5.00v
Orange:3.85V...

Re: Xbox has low 12v, cause?
Hi, sure: pictures are attached.
Yes, same as with PC PSUs. I think you can even use a PC psu, but the pins need to be switched as a Xbox uses different pinout.
I'm looking for a broken Xbox right now to swap out the psu, perhaps I can extract the new capacitors from this supposedly thrash psu and use them there. Still, I'm very interested in if this psu is in fact bad, the reason for it being bad and how to spot bad psu's like these! Heck, maybe it output the bad voltages all these years without me ever...

Re: Xbox has low 12v, cause?
It's a third party Chinese PSU, I found a reference to it here https://www.reddit.com/r/originalxbox/comments/c68cy2/are_chinese_universal_psus_for_xbox_reliable/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
It's 220, bought when the original one died in 2004. If only I'd known back then..
Shame of the cap replacement, but oh well at least I had some practice soldering again.Re: Xbox has low 12v, cause?
...ce=share

Re: Xbox has low 12v, cause?
Well guys, the result is disappointing. Zero change, still exactly at 10.80V.
3.3V is still high as well.
I'm starting to think this psu is crap. Any more ideas?

Re: Xbox has low 12v, cause?
For the 5 motherboard ones near cpu area I've ordered Panasonic os-con sepc capacitors, 1500 uF 6.3v
https://eu.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Panasonic/6SEPC1500M?qs=OE1iw1LrrPFgWeRhLxhAtQ==
Are those motherboard ones OK?
All psu ones are FR series which arrived today, I will put them in later.Re: Xbox has low 12v, cause?
...LxhAtQ==

Re: Xbox has low 12v, cause?
Guys, the two big PSU capacitors. Should I replace them also? "STO", 200V, 330uF. I could order this one but I'd like to have your opinion on this:

This is the only one I could find that has same voltage rating as the ones that are on it now. I've read that the big ones usually don't fail, is that true?Re: Xbox has low 12v, cause?
...SU capacitors.

Re: Xbox has low 12v, cause?
Got it.
Trying really hard to find similar ones at EU shops that ship to non-businesses but having no luck.
I'll start with the psu as I can maybe get those panasonic ones here. For the 5 CPU ones I'll have to wait till half of juli if I purchase them from aliexpress. But nothing to do about it.
To be sure: for the PSU I don't need to replace the two large ones right? They're 200v 330uf. Can't see a brand. The small ones are a mix of Acon, Samwha btw. Probably not too good Re: Xbox has low 12v, cause?

Re: Xbox has low 12v, cause?
You mean populate the places where there are none at the moment? Didn't know that was possible. I'll try to find the ones you linked on more sites (maybe I can avoid having to wait 50 days for them to arrive.).
So:
Psu - FR (might start with board first and see what happens)
Cpu area - the ones you linked, including now non populated ones
The rest of the board - also Panasonic FR or can I use FC? I find those a bit easier to find.
Maybe the gpu and cpu will also run a bit cooler after recap,...

Re: Xbox has low 12v, cause?
Thank you. Do you think the power supply isn't the cause? I was thinking of buying a broken Xbox for € 5,- and taking the PSU out, together with recap.
I will do the recap regardless, I see that you used smd ones in your linked post. Do you suggest I also replace the tiny silver smd ones next to the focus videochip?
Would this be ok?

Xbox has low 12v, cause?
Hi,
Decided to put a modchip in my original Xbox. It works fine and I wanted to install a bigger hard drive.
After installing it I noticed the hard drive powers down all the time, especially when the DVD drive is reading a disk.
Checked the molex connector:
12 volts is @ 10.85. When the DVD drive seeks it drops to 10.00 and the HDD powers down. It will go up to 10.80V again, drop to 10.00, power down, etc, etc. With the original drive it drops to ~10.20, and that is enough to keep it spinning. That's why I never noticed there is something wrong....

Re: Asus CUV4-X suddenly has coil whine
Well you were right, the capacitor was the cause. I measured it with a multimeter and decided to give it a try and solder it back. Pretty irritating to solder something so small
So, coil whine is gone and coil is *cold* after an hour of using the pc!
Thanks a lot to all of you for helping me out!...

Re: Asus CUV4-X suddenly has coil whine
Thanks a lot guys, close to solving it then probably!
ATM I don't have my multimeter with me but I will check the capacitor and post back results in a day or two.
Attached is picture of how the capacitor looked and U26 sheet.
I'm curious, aside from the coil probably heating when this capacitor is not in, what else happens? Other parts get too much power and degrade faster?...

Re: Asus CUV4-X suddenly has coil whine
Ok just found out that C220 (near the screw hole) was shifted and loose. It came off very easily (no force applied!).
I found it in the case but should I solder it back on or buy a replacement? No idea what type it is (ceramic?) I think it's brown.
Maybe this is why the coil got so hot?

Re: Asus CUV4-X suddenly has coil whine
Yeah it has these options, no effect after changing them though.
Well I installed the OS yesterday with the pci card and installed it's drivers, coil still cool after an hour.
Today I put the AGP card in along with the PCI card (monitor connected to PCI card): coil whine returned. When I connect the monitor to the AGP card it gets a lot louder.
Anyway, had it run with the AGP card with its drivers installed for 2 minutes at the desktop, powered off the PC and touched the coil....

Re: Asus CUV4-X suddenly has coil whine
Thanks guys.
They're the same, Rubicon.
Ah, that makes sense! I tried a BIOS Reset to revert any BIOS options I may have chosen that might affect the RAM. Didn't work though.
Well I had another look today and it takes about 30 seconds for it to become really hot. Holding down the reset button alters the 'whine' sound. When picture is again sent to the PC, it starts to whine louder. Also going to the BIOS "Main" page increases the whine dramatically....

Asus CUV4-X suddenly has coil whine
Hi,
I've a CUV4-X motherboard for that I didn't use for some weeks, I wanted to reinstall it so put it in it's case again last week, after powering it up I noticed it had 'coil whine'. When I remove the videocard the noise is gone, tried 2 videocards same results. I've used the board for years and this is the first time it has this annoying sound. I tried two PSU's but same results, I'm 100% sure it's coming from the motherboard just not sure which location.
Here is a picture of the motherboard http://hw-museum.cz/mb/46/asus-cuv4x

Re: Asus P5KPL-AM EPU power on-off issues
I did these things guys, didn't work. A new motherboard has become available to me, so it's obsolete now. Won't throw the old one away yet though.
