Re: Need BIOS dump for HP ENVY x360 Laptop - 15m-ed0013dx (9HP23UA)
What I find interesting about this problem is that if I boot up linux on a flash drive and then shut down, I am able to start up normally. I'm thinking this might be either a Windows issue or a hard drive issue; in this case an ssd. Any ideas?

Re: Need BIOS dump for HP ENVY x360 Laptop - 15m-ed0013dx (9HP23UA)
Why would it work with a USB charger, but not from the original adapter? I know the charging circuit works. It charges the battery fully. In fact I suspected the charging circuit and replaced the chip ISL9538 and 2 dual MOSFET's.
There is something going on when I shut the computer down through Windows that prevents it from restarting. Here is my original post [URL="https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=118715&highlight=crazy+laptop"]https://www.badcaps.net/...

Re: Need BIOS dump for HP ENVY x360 Laptop - 15m-ed0013dx (9HP23UA)
Both of these BIOS's will boot up, but neither of them will fix the problem.
The problem I have is after it boots into windows and I do a shutdown, it shuts down, but will not power up again; the led on the power button doesn't light either. I then have to unplug and plug the battery and push the power button again to start it.

Re: Crazy Laptop problem - HP Envy x360
I replaced the charging chip and the two dual MOSFET's. The charging circuit is back to the way it was when I suspected it (before I killed it), but the laptop still has the same problem. I shouldn't have jumped the gun on the charging circuit, but I assumed it was supposed to work just like other switching supplies where the voltage on the coil will always be a stable voltage. However, this charging chip is a boost/buck converter (using 4 MOSFET's). When battery power is low, it goes into buck mode (only 2 MOSFET's are switching) and the...

Re: Crazy Laptop problem - HP Envy x360
A little background on me: I started out as an electronic technician back in the 80's and slowly evolved into a self taught embedded systems engineer. I was designing embedded systems with 8051's and derivatives in assembly language and ANSI C. Worked for a few big companies and then went solo after 2008. I've fixed a lot of things in my days, including laptops, although fixing laptops was never my specialty; which is why I came here, where I can expect technicians who do specialize in them.
I measured those...

Re: Crazy Laptop problem - HP Envy x360
You know I did. I was getting the same phase signal on both sides, which is why I said the circuit was acting funny.
I also checked the inductor (2R2) with an LCR meter to not only make sure it wasn't open, but to make sure it was still 2.2uh. I removed the inductor so I could check the dual MOSFETs, which appeared to be okay and for good measure, I (because I had so much time on my hands) swapped the 2R2 inductor with the one in the 5v circuit and there was no change. The 5v still worked and the charging power supply...Last edited by John Jenson; 05-22-2023, 04:43 AM.

I thought I did that already. I was getting a square wave on the coil instead of a smooth voltage....

Re: Crazy Laptop problem - HP Envy x360
I believe I've found the problem. I was measuring switching supply voltages with my multimeter and measured 5v, 3.3v and then I measured a 4v. 4v seems like an odd ball voltage, so I broke out the scope and found a square wave on the coil. This circuit is the charge controller. Apparently the ISL9538B charge controller is acting funny. I'll have to wait 3 weeks to replace it due to China delivery.

Re: Crazy Laptop problem - HP Envy x360
It's obviously not the power button based on the symptom.
If I hold the power button down when it's running, the computer powers off. If I hit it again, it boots and the power button lights. It's just if I do a normal Windows shutdown, it turns off and won't come on again (charging light goes out as well). I've searched around this forum and no one has ever had such a problem.
I would love to get this schematic, but from where?...

Re: Crazy Laptop problem - HP Envy x360
So no one has any ideas on what could be the problem? Could I possibly be the first one to ever have this problem with an HP laptop?

Okay, replaced the BIOS. Did not fix the problem.

Just wondering because this laptop uses BitLocker to encrypt the data and I don't want to lose data. Of course I will definitely back up the data before I do it; I just don't want to have to do a reinstall....

Re: Crazy Laptop problem - HP Envy x360
I replaced the battery and the charging jack because they were low hanging fruit. Neither fixed the problem. My next move is to update the BIOS. I went to HP's site to get an updated BIOS. It asked for platform and version. This laptop is Windows 11. I clicked on Windows and there was only a selection for Windows 10. Can I update this even though this machine is Windows 11?...

Re: Crazy Laptop problem - HP Envy x360
I just realized you mentioned measuring without the battery connected; I originally thought you said with and without adapter. I just measured it and it is ~ 3.1v with the battery disconnected and 0v with it connected. So according to what you said, it appears to be correct....

Re: Crazy Laptop problem - HP Envy x360
I never thought it was the adapter for several reasons, including the fact that the adapter worked fine on a brand new laptop and the brand new adapter that came with it (and works with it) still doesn't cure the problem with this laptop.
The I2C lines are fine, I never doubted that because the BIOS still reads a lot of data from the battery. I mentioned that it couldn't read the status of the battery, but I should have said it couldn't read the charging state. It did read all the other information though....

Re: Crazy Laptop problem - HP Envy x360
I never did and never will. Everything in electronics has a theory to it. Anyone with a lot of experience in a particular item (such as a laptop), should have an explanation of why a voltage should be there, what it does and how it could affect the item regarding the issue. This is why I asked for this information....

Re: Crazy Laptop problem - HP Envy x360
I do trust you guys, otherwise I wouldn't be here. If someone gives me a range of values that a voltage should be and that voltage is under (even just a few hundred millivolts), I would suspect something might be wrong; but if not, there must be some minimum voltage that determines where there may be a problem, otherwise it's pointless to even measure that voltage.
It's a 10 pin connector. 1-3 are ground and 8 - 10 are 12V
I always measure from the closest ground, which would be the 3 ground pins...

Re: Crazy Laptop problem - HP Envy x360
"Likely fine" doesn't give me a lot of confidence. How much lower would it have to be for it to not be fine? In your opinion, does the ad_id have anything to do with the issue I am having? You don't think this slightly lower voltage could possibly have anything to do with this issue?...
