A bit of an update... I flashed SOC ROM with T203 dump. The device came back in DFU mode finally (!).
Unfortunately the restore failed (IPD update / no touchpad). Turned out the flex is broken so cannot continue with the restore.
Thanks for looking

Board on bench.
Checked the rails listed there. All stable. I am getting a stable ALL_SYS_PWRGD/PM_PCH_PWROK/PM_PCH_SYS_PWROK/PLT_RST_L too. When connected via USB both ports negotiate USB speed, PID, VID, etc.
I looked at the board under the microscope, nothing suspicious found. Granted, I did not look under the metal shields....Last edited by cruiser_; 03-13-2024, 07:10 AM.

820-01958 MBA 13" '20 A2179 - unable to enter DFU
I've got A2179 of unknown history - no liquid damage visible under microscope.
Macbook starts to an Apple logo, after a few minutes it either turns off or shows error screen (computer had to be restarted etc). Battery is shot (ripped).
I tried to DFU it. No luck with keyboard sequence - although I am not sure if keyboard works at all - wasn't able to 'D'iagnose or 'R'ecover.
Board on the bench... Both USBc ports negotiate 20V and current fluctuates a bit to steady out at around 200mA.
I jumped SOC_FORCE_DFU with PP1V8_SLPS2R. No luck, SOC_DFU_STATUS...

A1989 / 820-0850-A PPVCCEDRAM_S0_CPU low
Struggling to get this board working...
I noticed it had PPVCCEDRAM_S0_CPU at 0V (with a microsecond spike over 1V) ; enable ( PVCCEDRAMS0_EN_FILT_BUF @ 1.8V) for U7710 was present & had no PVCCEOPIO_EDRAM_PGOOD.
I replaced U7710 from a 820-01041 board (U8110) - same chip, ISL 95870hruz.
Getting PVCCEOPIO_EDRAM_PGOOD at 0.7V but PPVCCEDRAM_S0_CPU only at ... 50-60 mV.
Thought ok, maybe the chip was bad. Took it from yet another board - same behavior. Injecting 1V to this rail only pulled 500mA...
Is it possible at all that at...

you asked about fans so I put it in a case to see how they operate
'naked' board behaves the same way current consumption / cycling wise....

they run calmly, relatively steadily but go full speed for a sec just before the cycle ends / current drops.
Put in in a case ... USB pendrive only blinks once or twice. Nothing on the USBc->HDMI adaptor.

LOL great obervation, will keep it close to my heart
Yeah I'm only after the data at this point; A little bit of an update though.
I did succeed with a revive, although it took 20+ times - had to try different on/usb connect scenarios to keep the board working long enough for a revive.
As a side question - I noticed a few e people would get rid of CPU coil(s) to prevent it from starting at all for a successful DFU/revive. How does that work though, I would think the revive process would stop if CPU is not...Last edited by cruiser_; 01-24-2024, 08:11 AM.

A1989 / 820-00850-A stuck in recovery
A friend replaced the display and it stopped booting. Then he did DFU/Revive... wants the data.
820-0850 is now stuck in 'Recovery'. Can be forced into DFU with a jumper but behavior almost the same.
The USBCs negotiate 20V and charge the battery.
Workin with only a battery/touchpad connected. During the revive the board starts the CPU for a few minutes but then fails, usually with error 9 (see attached log)
Nothing stands out on thermal imagery (battery coil/mosfet, CPU phases etc - photo shows U7220/U7210 - CPUCORE_PHASE1&2).
The only short...Last edited by cruiser_; 01-22-2024, 07:23 AM.

off to SMC current looks like this:

green light to full start:

unfortunately I have no similar board to compare. does this look ok?
there is activity on SPI, but I guess that could come from SMC and not CPU?https://off to SMC current looks lik...?<br /> <br />Last edited by cruiser_; 12-08-2023, 09:24 AM.

A1342 820-2567-A brain dead
hi everyone,
i've got this ancient board here, repairing it as an exercise really. it seems to be brain dead.
upon triggering start via SMC_ONOFF the fan starts to spin, USB powers up, CPU gets hot but there is no further activity.
nothing on the video output, no USB activity (using pendrive with an LED).
I've read the bios, it looked ok, valid checksums, model/.mb match etc.
I cleared VSS and wrote the bios back. NO change.
any suggestion as to what might be the cause of this?...

Re: A1502 - unable to run diagnostics
The board inside of this case is 820-4924-09. From the files I found for this model, all of them had FVH3 as model code.
Each and every time I changed the serial to the one on the case (it indicates FVH5 model), the board wouldn't start - and cycled.
However... when I updated the serial in the 'original' dump (which was FVH3...) the board booted, new serial was visible in OS, however the diagnostics wouldn't run UNLESS i put 4D1EDE05-38C7-4A6A-9CC6-4BCCA8B38C14:MLB/HW_MLB values in NVRAM.
Tried clearing VSS/SVS...Last edited by cruiser_; 06-29-2023, 05:11 AM.

Re: A1502 - unable to run diagnostics
Ok I am 99% certain this is down to a borked firmware file. I dumped it via linux with flashrom...
- fsys checksum is invalid
- hardware code is different
- country code in serial is unknown (C10)
How this boots and works 'fine' is beyond my understanding
[CODE]xxx:/tmp$ ./macserial -i C10PF6VQFVH3
Country: C10 - Unknown, please report!
Year: P - 2015
Week: F - 12 (19.03.2015-25.03.2015)
Line: 6VQ - 1418 (copy 3)
Model: FVH3 - MacBookPro12,1...

Re: A1502 - unable to run diagnostics
ok thanks for the confirmation. I do not have a usb ethernet adapter. This is more of a nuisance than a real problem, I just like my merchandise to be 100%
There is a lot of flux on SPI chip, someone must have played with it.
One last lead I have is the serial#, it beings with C10 - some serial number decoders I found say it's an unknown location. Might try to replace it with C02.
I wonder if the diag/recovery code is stored in SMC or EFI. Did not find any references to osrecovery.apple.com in available...Last edited by cruiser_; 06-15-2023, 03:11 AM.

Re: A1502 - unable to run diagnostics
I've just noticed that the logic board has a different serial to that of the case.
Is it possible that serial number is stored elsewhere (say, touchpad?) and diagnostics/recovery fails because of that?

if you can boot off USB then do some low level testing first - start with memtest

A1502 - unable to run diagnostics
A1502 / 820-4924-A. Unable to run diagnostics or recovery over internet.
Getting errors -1003F or -1003D shorty after inputting wifi details.
Runs Catalina & Big Sur fine. EFI updated to latest for the model (481).
I can register it with my iCloud / FMA.
Tried replacing the SSD, installing fresh OS, replacing wifi card.
Tried different 'internet routes' (APs). Tried disabling FMA.
Even stood up a custom AP where I can sniff traffic - macbook successfully looks up osrecovery.apple.com and connects on port 80 (dumping below some...

Re: A1286 820-2915-B CPU throttling
Finally, SOLVED!!!
Put it on a shelf for some time and in the meantime I got my hands on a replacement A1382 battery made by 2power. Yes, a non-genuine Chinese knock off...
Lo and behold, no more throttling!!!
So new replacement A1382 battery from unknown manufacturer, even though correctly reported, charging up and in 'good' OS condition = throttling
Original battery from A1278 (same connector but different capacity) = throttling
Turns out that apart from GPU throttling issue...Last edited by cruiser_; 05-24-2023, 03:09 AM.

Re: A1286 820-2915-B CPU throttling
so i spent a few hours on this again today - down to looking at SMBUS communications between SMC and U55* chips with logic analyzer.
All looked fairly ok.
Was suspecting 'airport proximity' readings to be wrong but it was a dead end.
i am now chasing rabbit hole of not having reads on VN0R, TG1D & TW0P.
@gurangax can you please check if you are getting the values at all? Presumingly you are on MBP8,2/EMC2563?
