  • Re: Trying to fix ESS based sound card, problems with amplifiers

It was a bad solder joint, after reflow the card works perfectly.

  • Trying to fix ESS based sound card, problems with amplifiers

Hi everyone. I have a problem with my ES1868 based sound card, mainly with it's amplifier part. The right channel is crackling all the time, but only when amplified. When the card is set to LINE OUT, both channels work fine. I have replaced the amplifier chips with new ones but the problem persists (chips are two LM386N1). When there is only right amplifier installed the channel works fine but when there are both, the left is fine but the right crackles. Made some measurements - left amplifier outputs approx. 6V but the right one outputs 12V. The weird thing is that bot GAIN pins on the left amplifier...

  • Re: 4700uF 6.3v and 3300uF 16v in a 10mm Diameter

I'm currently in a need of 4700uF 10mm caps and noticed that Rubycon ZLQ series is suitable for this. Mouser has them and Digikey too but the postage price is crazy, at least for an individual person like me who just wants to repair single PSU. Are there any other sources I could use?

  • Re: Old 286 motherboard cries for help

I cannot solder it properly from the top side because of the corrosion. But it's soldered nicely from the bottom and has good continuity according to my multimeter. These leaking batteries are no joke and I am always very disheartened when I see such a corroded motherboard. Affects all board up to 486. Luckily, some newer 486 boards started using coin batteries.

I'll probably try to reflow all joints just to be sure and figure out how to strenghten the connections on the upper side. It's probably fine now but you can never be too...

  • Re: Old 286 motherboard cries for help

I have some news about this. To put it simple, the motherboard works fine again, at least is seems to. Just decided to give it another go the next day and it booted fine without any glitches. Played some games on it, including Wolfenstein 3D, Prince of Persia and Commander Keen series. Let Commander Keen 4 loop for about an hour. Worked great.

I started to wonder what the problem was and I have this theory: the board has two CMOS setups - ordinary CMOS setup for date, time, floppy and HDD configs, and XCMOS setup for memory timings,...

  • Old 286 motherboard cries for help

Hi! I have problem s with a 286 motherboard I have acquired some time ago. The battery needed removal and corrosion from it's gunk cleaned, and after applying some patch wires all seemed to work. I could boot from floppy and HDD and was able to play some Prince of Persia.

Then I tried to connect an external battery (3V coin cell from my 486 rig). Things looked promising as the CMOS settings were being saved so I turned off the computer and let sit for maybe 20 minutes.

The problems started when I turned on the computer again. I kept seeing graphical corrution even...

  • Re: Corsair HX 450W shuts itself down after a while

I've tried to open the PSU right after a shutdown and (carefully) placed my finger on every component I could reach. The only thing that produced any kind of warmth was the transformer and even it wasn't so hot it would bother me.

I have resoldered the pins of both transformers. Currently I don't have a PC I could test it on but I'll do it as soon as it'll be possible.

To clarify - are you talking about pins that are circled out, specifically the one with the orange arrow? I cannot see anything there but I'll do as you say and resolder them all, just to be sure....

Do you see the crack on the picture? Because I have disassembled the whole PSU, inspected the bottom side with magnifying glass and couldn't find any crack.

  • Re: Corsair HX 450W shuts itself down after a while

Yeah I have checked the solder side of the PCB and everything looks fine. I'm attaching a photo so you can see.

The fan itself spins freely when upside down so that won't be a problem. There must be something else. The seller I have bought the PSU from has another one (650W variant) and when he puts it in a case so the fan is facing the inside, it shuts down too. He contacted Corsair support hoping that they would give us some advice.

It's just weird that nobody noticed such a problem with this series...

  • Re: Corsair HX 450W shuts itself down after a while

The voltage is 400V, as seen on the attached photo. Would this problem be affected by case temperature? It seems that higher temperature speeds up the shut down. I have capacitor tester if that helps, I can desolder it and measure it. However it will show me only capacitance and ESR value....

  • Re: Corsair HX 450W shuts itself down after a while

Well I have checked the underside of the board and it looks pristine. Some flux residue but that's that. About testing the voltage rails - you mean I should check both of them (+5V STB and e.g. +12V) with two multimeters and see which rail gets shut down first, that means first which hits 0V?

I've tried the PSU with another AM3 motherboard and it's the same. I have even tried to use it in my Pentium II machine which is primarily dependant on +5V rail and no shutdown occured. The insides got warm as the CPU hit 40°C...

  • Corsair HX 450W shuts itself down after a while

Hi. I have bought used Corasir HX 450W power supply and have an annoying problem. I have a PC case with PSU situated on the top of it. Whenever I install this PSU in it and close the cover the computer shuts down after a while. If I let the case open everything is fine. I'm using mATX AM3 motherboard with integrated graphics and am cooling the CPU with big Scythe cooler. With it the CPU idles at circa 40°C/104°F.

I tried two different PSUs and none of them shows this symptom. The integrated GPU (in the northbridge) gets pretty hot but I'm sure it's not hot enough to overheat the...
