I have this Exercycle's computer that runs on Alkaline 1.5V Batteries. I cant seem to get it to run on any of my 1.2V rechargeable batteries, the device malfunctions.
So I was thinking is there anyway I could solder wires and connectors to give it an option to be run with a DC adapter? Maybe grab a cheap ebay 3VDC Adapter and solder the points?

soldering paste? what is it called?
Hey Guys, Amateur hobbyist here, improved my soldering skill very well over the past couple of years. But I am running out of that sticky darkish reddish paste thingy, I think its called resin or soldering flux for the correct term? I really like using that over my flux pen as it solders the wires real well and fast, even though I am using the good solder I still prefer using some of the cream. I ordered some from ebay but it was a solid not a paste, looking up on YouTube it seems people use the solid to make the paste themselves.
I got quite confused looking as ebay as sole say...Last edited by newtoCaps101; 08-31-2013, 10:23 PM.

Re: ebay camera lcd replacement??
it matters man
now tell me about the cheap lcds, what do I do...
-
Re: ebay camera lcd replacement??
lol. but the Genuine(used) is priced a lot more then I can justify spending.
So do they die on their own or something?? the cheap one?
are there any other options, it seems to work fine with the cracked screen, I just wanted to replace it anyway.

ebay camera lcd replacement??
friends camera needs a new lcd, its broken I was wondering if I should grab a china made ebay part and swap it out or just find a oem part?
I mean its just the lcd, it wont affect the photo or anything or die on its own? or will it look so crappy quality to look at and be so bad that it will take out the camera one day with short circuits when it dies? I heard a lot of things about iphone displays that people buy from ebay. So I thought I'd rather ask around before I click buy now.
I can get this for about $20.

Re: trying to fix or replace a bad power adapter - please help
You are right, I must have missed that part sorry. so it doesn't matter if I feed it VDC or VAC since the bridge rectifier will convert it into 22VDC? So Does it matter or is it better I use the 15VDC adapter or the 12VDC adapter? And what can I do about the voltage drop? will be it a issue that may cause any audio problems or damage the device in the long run?

Re: trying to fix or replace a bad power adapter - please help
thanks but look at the last page, We are past the point of using the old transformer as I accidentally broke a enamel coated wire, soleft with the 2 options. spend $50 buy a 16 VAC adapter like josh said, or use either my 15v adapter or the 12V adapter my friend included, said he used it for a few years.
suggestions? ...

Re: trying to fix or replace a bad power adapter - please help
Great explanation thanks. now the thing is actually a decoder, it only decodes and of course controls the volume level, the actual amplification is done on my subwoofer which has a built in amp, this think is optional and goes "between" the computer and the subwoofer and speaker set to "Decode" things to dolby digital, pro logic and provide more options and effects. you know? But good point with the headphone amp there.
So do you think if I used the 12V the sound would...

Re: trying to fix or replace a bad power adapter - please help
The laptop one plugs in too.. just saying
stuck between the 15v dc and 12v dc now..heck saves me $50..
anybody here know how to open a laptop power brick? then maybe I could rewire it nicely with the cord from the original adapter.Last edited by newtoCaps101; 03-08-2013, 06:43 AM.

Re: trying to fix or replace a bad power adapter - please help
he said this is how he ran it for a few years? I dont know but should I use his +12 adapter or my 15V one. I mean if I had to chose between he two.. would you pick this one or the one I showed in the first picture? I would guess 15 is more close then 12 so..hey if these two would work, why not..

ah screw it fellas...I think I am just going to get that one josh pointed out..newzealand.rs-online.com/web/p/plug-in-power-supply/2304073/ - this will work just to confirm, I wont have any worry of damaging my decoder right?

Re: trying to fix or replace a bad power adapter - please help
its around 4Cm into 3.3cm x 4.5cm give or take, I am sure something close to it I could try fitting in the box. You know if I can get that for a few bucks instead of having to spend $50...that'd be great.. heck if its really that important I could build a small box from particle board maybe? ...

Re: trying to fix or replace a bad power adapter - please help
I f ed up.
I was putting it all together in the case and the enamel coated wire on one of them broke right off the beginning. needless to say there is no more enamel exposed wire left for me to solder on. unless you guys have any more ideas.
looks like I will be buying the adapter josh showed me

this is the one right? I realize I may have to solder the wiring but other then...

Re: trying to fix or replace a bad power adapter - please help
What are my chances? I mean its a 10W device and finely built a decoder actually so not sure if there will be any shorts, but then again.. Do you think this can damage my device any way in the long run? should I spend the $50 and get the adapter Josh showed. I mean it has the same specs right? only more Amps which is no big deal, the device will draw as much as it needs, in my case only 600mA.
But I don't want to start a fire but I hear its pretty okay? and thermal fuses aren't a big...

Re: trying to fix or replace a bad power adapter - please help
Okay Guys So I went the easy way, I removed the thermal fuse, then re soldered 2 red wires to the enamel coated copper wires. then connected the 2 red wires to a larger wire to connect to the mains, heatshrinks everything uses some contact cement epoxy to attach the old transformer tape and then placed some electrical tape over it and a cable tie. done. connected it and there is power
briefly connected my computer fan and it spins up and I did notice a short in there / spark but I think its okay?...Last edited by newtoCaps101; 03-08-2013, 04:01 AM.

Re: trying to fix or replace a bad power adapter - please help
but my multimeter is with my friend. I wont have it until another week..
how about I just remove the thermal fuse and connect the thin copper wires to 1 per red wire and then put it back together? thats how its supposed to work right? with out the thermal fuse? I could probably heat shrink it and then...ummm how would I seal the tape back? any ideas?
what do you guys think?...

Re: trying to fix or replace a bad power adapter - please help
I have cut the tape on the primary side and located the thermal fuse there are two tiny copper wire strands connected to the two legs of the fuse. the two legs are also connected to the two red wires...one leg has come off..so where do I go from here? do I cut off the fuse and solder the legs togather using a piece of wire? do I heat shrink it or...

Hey are you sure this will work?
http://newzealand.rs-online.com/web/p/plug-in-power-supply/2304073/
if nothing works I would go for it, since its in NZ and around $50 altogether..but you know it would be great if I could just dig out the fuse and solder the led together and put some heat shrink and bypass the thermal fuse. I have never done this but some instructions and pictures will be helpful. The Primary is the side with Red wires connecting directly from the power...

Re: trying to fix or replace a bad power adapter - please help
I am in Auckland, NZ. I have plenty of experience, have my own little soldering station and I do small time hobby jobs every now and then when I recover stuff from trash or salvage parts or try to fix broken things.
Come on help me out guys. I have repaired broken PCB and stuff before so if you can help me fix this one it will save me $50 USD (that's how the guy on ebay wants for the 120V replacement shipped) and on top of that I will need to spend another $20 on a step down 120V to 240V step down...
