Re: Good Book for Consumer Electronics Repair?
I suggest taking a class on electronics first. You will receive a lot more knowledge than a book can give you alone! Believe it or not there are safety concerns with low voltage as well!

Re: Remember the Vacuum Tube Era
I still repair and mod tube amps for musicians. I love it. Simple as hell. Fun and rewarding to finish the job. I work on SS amps too but would rather work on tube amps all day long.

Re: My capacitors aren't bulging
That is just a temporary fix. I would investigate further to find the problem. That is just a symptom of something wrong!...

Re: what did i get myself into?
Love it!
You are about to enter into a fixation on fixin! It can be fun and you may make a few extra bux on the side! Just be careful and remember slow is the new fast. Take your time, post on this forum when you get stumped, and learn something along the way.
Good Luck!Last edited by twbranch; 05-22-2013, 01:05 PM.

Check all connections to the main board. Get a camera and take some very good pictures please.

Re: Is it shorted?
Show pictures of the MoBo and where you plan to test. Also, what kind of DMM are you using? To test for shorts you use the DC volts setting you should read zero for a short with power to mobo (not recommended since you have no experience). Put the meter on ohms (horseshoe looking icon) and it should read zero with power off (Highly recommended). I don't like the continuity tester for reasons that I have been burned using crappy DMMs in the past that gave false readings in this mode. To each his own.
If you are testing an inductor then you are going...

Re: Low cost TVs, STBs and DVD/Blu-Ray units - simpler to fix?
I agree with tom66. I have fixed store bought just to keep them out of the landfills. However, the upper tier TV has better schematics and better documentation. Usually when fixing store brand its a crap shoot as to the problem because I seem to find errors in documentation or the documentation is lacking information.

Re: who speak french here
Why? If you speak french on here you alienate those that don't. You seem to speak or at least type English well.

Re: Making your own solder tips.
I made my own in a class many years ago. I don't remember what we coated it in but it was copper. It actually lasted for a while and was a good tip for me. I haven't made any since.

Re: Fake shit, or real thing from ebay.
Just my opinion but I wouldn't buy any caps from eBay. That is unless you know the seller and know the product is real. I would buy from a reputable seller. Don't forget, Badcaps sells caps!

Re: Cheap vs expensive HDMI cables
I bought a 6ft cheapy and it seems to have cheap connector. I would be willing to bet if it stays hoooked up to the device the whole time it will be fine but if it unhooked and hooked a lot it will be junk in no time. That is where they are cheap not necessarily the actual cable itself.

Re: Need to find a battery
If you have Batteries Plus in your town, they recell batteries. It is kind of expensive but I have had a few done myself and they work well.

I put an ad on CL and had a ton of emails that turned out lucrative. Now it has dried up!

Re: Bypass caps articles and learning
Thanks for articles like this. I have a BSEE but don't actually engineer anything. I work as an avionics technician. It is nice to read stuff to keep the education going.

Re: EMPREX LM-1905 will not turn on
We will wait on the pictures. I kind of doubt it is the ICs. Need to check those pictures before settling on the next action.

Re: LG rz-32lz55 lcd tv faulty image
HAHA! I guess what I was saying was...can reseating a particular cable reset the tv in some way? I can't recall if I tried a reset on the one I had a few years ago. But the reseat fixed a similar problem to this! Thanks!
