• Re: Unknown Chang caps; suitable substitute?

Thanks for the feedback stj and Behemot. In the meantime I noticed that ELNA RJF is also an option: 72 mOhm at 100kHz, 760 mA ripple current. I think I'll go for those, as they are low ESR but not as extreme as the SunCon WG series. Seems like a reasonable choice for this application.

  • Unknown Chang caps; suitable substitute?

I'm about to recap a portable DVD player motherboard which doesn't power on anymore. Some of the caps are slightly bulged, there is no output on the buck converters, no indication of any other damage, so it looks like the usual bad electrolytic scenario. The problem is that I can't tell the specs of the original caps. They are Chang 300uF 16V 105 deg C, 8mm diameter x 8 mm high, but without any series marking on them.

Suitable replacements I can obtain include SunCon (Sanyo) WG and CA series. The WG are "Super Low ESR" (30 mOhm at 100kHz, 1140 mA ripple current), the CA...

  • Re: Attempting repair of H240AS-00

For posterity, here is the outcome. By comparison with another still working supply, it turned out that the cathode of D53 is near the center. It's a moot point though, as the driver IC and some other bits on the upright PCB had exploded. So these supplies are definitely not repairable after that snubber cap has gone. Pity.

  • Attempting repair of H240AS-00

A friend of mine has had several Dell power supplies fail in a school and asked if I could figure out the cause. They are model H240AS-00 and they all died from the same catastrophic breakdown of snubber cap C52 as described in threads here, here and here. Parts visibly damaged are Q51, C52, R25, R55 and D53. The fuse and rectifier diodes still measure OK.

  • Re: Which manufacturer is this?

Thanks a lot! I've dug up their datasheets. I was expecting some low-ESR caps, but RD, RG and RK all seem to be somewhat similar general purpose caps. So I can now look for suitable replacements.

  • Which manufacturer is this?

Anyone knows which manufacturer this is? There is no name on the body, just an oval logo with an oval cutout. Series include RD, RG and RK. Dark brown body with white lettering.

It's one of the caps on my ADSL modem. After a short powerdown it was almost impossible to get it back up again. Eventually I got it going but its capacitors are clearly living on borrowed time!

  • Re: Dead Acer AL2416W monitor, need help choosing replacement caps

With great pleasure I can now announce that I've successfully fixed my monitor!

I figured I'd replace the suspicious caps first, as they can relatively easily be replaced by known good ones. Electronics shop AITEC (aitec.be) told me that they order regularly through Farnell, and so they could include my preferred caps in their next batch. I went for Rubycon 35ZLJ100M6.3X11.

I replaced the caps one by one, forming the legs of each new cap with needle-nose tweezers into S shapes suitable...

  • Re: Dead Acer AL2416W monitor, need help choosing replacement caps

I've removed the inverter board and took some closeups of the bung side. Looks normal, no popped bungs, but as they're prone to failure and relatively easy to replace, I'd like to swap them for good ones anyway.

While looking for replacement parts, I've noticed that RS Components unfortunately doesn't deliver to private customers, at least not in Belgium or the Netherlands; the registration process requires an official company registration number. Perhaps this is useful info to add to the where...

  • Re: Dead Acer AL2416W monitor, need help choosing replacement caps

@retiredcaps: okay, I see what you mean -- even though all CCFLs light up, one or more could electrically behave quirky, which the inverter driver then detects within a few seconds and then shuts itself down. I'll do more testing this weekend before ordering any replacement parts.

But I'm surprised to hear that a CCFL could appear to shine fine, while upsetting the inverter. What sort of characteristic would it show in this case that triggers the driver shutdown? Something like excessive lamp current...

Attached are two pictures from the lower and upper side of the inverter board, viewing the caps from the top side. These were taken last weekend; at the moment I can't access the monitor, but I'll post pictures of the bottom side of the caps tomorrow. I think I might get away with using slightly longer caps, as there's some room left....

  • Dead Acer AL2416W monitor, need help choosing replacement caps

Last week I got an Acer AL2416W monitor (VGA only model) from a friend, exhibiting the "2 seconds to black" problem (the monitor, that is, not the friend). I've read the service manual and this forum on what others had to say about their model, then opened it up and did some structured testing.

I think only the caps on the inverter board are shot:
    - Acer logo shows, then disappears
    - Picture is faintly visible with a flashlight. Top tip: shine the flashlight while moving a white window around on the PC attached to it -- it's much easier to detect faint movements...

  • Re: New Members - please post your introductions here

Hello everone, I've found upon this wonderful forum when researching the symptoms of a dead monitor I recently got from a friend. I've been exploring and repairing things ever since I was a kid -- I just love the "gotcha!" feeling when you know you've successfully fixed something using your own wits and skills, and for a very low cost.

A nice example (without capacitors, alas) was my bathroom fan that suddenly didn't run anymore: all replacement models had their screws in other places, which would require...
